Remembering John Hope

#1 Postby cycloneye » Mon Jun 13, 2005 6:51 am

Today June 13 is the third anniversary of John Hopes death as he died on this date in 2002 so let's pause for a moment.I remember him for those updates when he was up all my family paid attention and no noise was heard inside my house during the duration of John Hopes updates. There will not be another like John Hope doing the tropical updates at TWC as he was the Master of the tropics.

It is hard to believe it's been 3 years. Seems like yesterday TWC and the Met world were in mourning.

He's a hard act to follow. Downright impossible but something all Met's should strive for.

Goodness--- it's been 3 years! I was just thinking about him Saturday as Arlene came in. He is sorely missed! He was a great forecaster.

John Hope's weather knowledge and his sincerity is much missed. He always seemed to care more about weather information and reporting than just being a tv star.

John Hope represented what used to be right about the weather channel.
He was not into sensational journalism, he had an extremely professional
demeanor about him and is greatly missed.

Truly missed.......I remember that day well, it was so sad. Almost like I had lost a member of my immediate family. It was strange.......a man I did not even know gave me such a feeling of loss and grief. Thats the kind of man he was. He impacted you.

An interesting tidbit of storm trivia related to the late John Hope...

From weather.com's "Storms of the Century
"I was a relatively new hurricane forecaster at the National Hurricane Center, having been assigned that role when the hurricane specialists group was created in 1967," recalls John Hope, Tropical Weather Expert at The Weather Channel.
"We knew when Camille reached the Gulf of Mexico that it was going to be an awesome hurricane. The morning that it cleared western Cuba, a U.S. Navy reconnaissance plane, which normally flew into hurricanes at low levels, opted not to penetrate the eye of the hurricane because of its great intensity, so we were unable at that time to assess exactly how strong it was. The crew, however, could see clearly the well-defined eye of the hurricane on its airborne radar.

I'll always remember the flight meteorologist's remark, 'That's one hell of a hurricane out there.'

That "one hell of a hurricane" was named for Camille Hope, John's then-teenage daughter. According to http://www.explore-weather.com: In 1969 the naming conventions for hurricanes were not strictly controlled as they are today. John Hope, a meteorologist at the National Hurricane Center named the hurricane in honor of his daughter Camille who had just graduated from high school.

wow, thats amazing, to know that you had a hurricane named after you...especially that one! whew!
I to, as has everyone else on here already said, miss John greatly and he will forever be remembered in the world of Tropical Weather Forecasting and anything related to hurricanes. The world lost a great man that sad day.
