The Dc-10 had a problem early on where one of the 2 wings mounted engines would fall off in flight. :eek: Not something that inspires confidence! Personally though I've flown on several hundred DC-10 flights and as one of the first of the wide-bodied planes they were a pleasure compared to 727's/737's/ DC-9(MD-80's :-)

I was at work (at powerline and Cypress creek, (right off of oriole, 1 block down behind that wendys on cypress)

We all heard it, and knew it was too low. One lady was outside and saw it going at about 100 feet, nose up, high angle of attack, directly over the buildings to the south of us (office complex). A couple people screamed, I was actually waiting for an impact, thats how loud it was. I had been making jokes about how one of these days........ Well, joke no more will I. Really glad to see nobody was hurt :)

We did not hear an impact, just engine noise. Apparently it hit about 3 miles east. Its some damn good piloting to get a cargo jet like that so far :)

Wow - the pilot did an amazing job. I have several acquaintances that use the DC3's to transport stuff to Marsh Harbor so this crash really got my attention.

I'm still not sure who the plane was registered to or if it was on a charter cargo flight. The Abacos are a relatively small place and you usually end up having some knowledge of those involved in plane crashes to/from there. At least this time people didn't die.

DC-3/C-47s are not the easiest planes to fly (Dad piloted one in WW II, and the "hydraulics" were almost non-existent...mostly "fly-by-wire", which contributed to his already massive chest/arm strength from having been an accordion player pre-war).

And, although they aren't as huge as present generation cargo ships, they do have a 97' wingspan...four feet less than a B-17.

You're quite correct in assessing the skills of the pilot/co-pilot. :larrow:
