Let's all play nice

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Let's all play nice

#1 Postby mf_dolphin » Wed Jun 15, 2005 9:27 am

Over the last couple of weeks I've noticed a couple of things that tend to cause problems in the forum. WIth it early in the season let's all try a little harder to help each other get through what promises to be an active year again.

Things that bother the Mets:
1. Improper use of term LLC. Unless it's a real close low then don't use this term and please have some data to support the LLC.

2. Development in the tropics means wave - TD, TD - TS, TS - hurricane.

3. Rash statements like "Florida is safe this year" when it just the middle of June.

4. Calling a blob by the next name in the list since it might have a chance. We have to remember that people read this board even if they don't post. Misinformation is a bad thing.

For the Mets:
1. We appreciate your input and knowledge but some of us like to watch blobs. Let us have our fun but if we get out of hand then let us know nicely why we're getting overly excited. :-) That's how we learn what to watch for to see if a blob has a chance to grow up. Special kudo's to Wxman57 for his patience :-)

2. I'd like to see more of our Mets focus on the Analysis Forum. That's why it's there :-)

For all:
1. We're here because we all have a facination with mother nature's power. Let's remember that and help each other get through another year safely.

2. This is not a contest. If you make a good call or guess on a system congrats. We don't need 100 posts saying look what I did :-)

3. If there's a problem with a post or poster don't try and handle it on the open board. PM a staff memebr and we'll look into the situation. We're easy to find, just look at the bottom of the page where it shows who's on-line. The staff is in different colors. Just like sports, often it's the guy that throws the second punch that gets the penalty.

4. Try and look for a thread that already exists on a subject before starting a new one. Duplicate threads will get locked and we may not have time to PM you at the height of the season.

We have the best collection of tropical enthiusiasts on the net and we're only going to get bigger and better. Let's work together to make this the best and most friendly place on the net! :-) Thanks for your continuing support!

Seriously, I suspect what Marshall and Chad want here is not just praise (we're beyond that but it is appreciated I'm sure). What they want is....

Cooperation! Please re-read what Marshall is asking here and comply.

It's mid-June, lots can happen over the next few months.

thanks for all the comments but Mary hit the nail on the head! If we all just talk to each other in our posts like we would face to face then the rest is a piece of cake :-)

S2K - aka as my Internet Home - you're welcome!

Just trying to keep the numerous posts for every TS or H to a minimum. ;-)

I think it's possible but sometimes you need to repeat requests like yours Marshall's. Wouldn't it be nice if for every new member to click on Tropics, a list of rules popped up first? Then a quiz? Then the opportunity to post.

I think that is great advice, as it is getting tiresome that every bit of disturbed air, or clusters of T-storms becomes a federal case. I know everyone is nervous, but it is time to act rationally. This is a good policy that is being instituted.

Marshall my pet peeve is naming blobs. This board is the sole source of tropical weather information for many and we do not need to unduly alarm anyone. The "Florida is safe this year" posts are getting old too. If someone can accurately predict that a particular area is safe for the whole season then good for them. But we all know that isnt possible.

You knwo there's a line between saying "the pattern looks to be shaping up for systems to recurve because...." and "xyz location is safe" Let's just make sure we don't cross it :-)

George if they can predict the hurricane season like that I want to be their manager. 10 percent of what they would make from the insurance companies alone would be fine by me :-)

Let's be a little kinder to people who are new to the board and don't have as much knowledge but are full of enthusiasm. I appreciate everyone who has been helping to answer my numerous questions. This is such a wonderful board and thanks to all the mods for their hard work.

Huzzah! Well said!

As for the peeve about giving blobs names (when we all know Steve McQueen was the only real name in The Blob) I think it comes from the human tendencies to 1. give objects names and 2. once a person has associated the blob as a potential future storm, it's a short walk to naming it.

A little patience on one end and a little judiciousness on the other and we'll all be golden.

Sounds good MF. One thing is that many times I'v been right about the LLC issue but called wrong? I hope to enjoy a season with discussion instead of people calling me wrong or another thing. Thank you for all the hard work you Admins do. Great board. :P

Cycloneye, this morning I can see found my Low pressure area northwest of Jamaica. I knew it....

I am glad ya'll put this up. I recomended this forum to a new friend that has more than a moderate interest in the forum and I would really expect that she be treated as well as I have been over the couple of years I have been lurking and posting here and in the chat. Thanks guys and I look forward to a great year sharing ideas with all on the forum--and of course the chat room.

Yes kudos to all our Moderators! My girlfriend and I check this board regularly and find everyone's opinions very valuable. And sometimes, amusing!
My pet peeve is actually when people start bickering about things on teh board that evolve into threads upon threads of fighting. Lets all remember that we are here to discuss the weather!

p.s. We told "Dad" about this site. He's a retired professional meteorologist who just visited us in Florida from Denver and was thrilled to "experience" a named storm (Arlene) and be able to chat with his daughter about it. Even though we didn't get much from it, he said it was enough for him! He was interested to check out this site and live vicariously along with us for the thrills and chills of hurricane season in Florida.

I'm with feederband, this portion of the board IS for the amateurs - let them post what they will as long as they're not rude or offensive. The Pros should take no offense to this, they have their own set of crayons 8-)

I agree, but for what it's worth, I think the biggest beef that the mets have is when the try to provide advice and their expertise to amatures and it becomes rejected. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it can be a little annoying when someone claims something is occurring and won't accept evidence that says the opposite.
