SEVERE flooding caused by storms and torrential rains has left up to 48 people dead and washed away more than 1000 homes in Afghanistan.
Rural Development Minister Mohammed Hanif Attmar said: "We have reports of 48 people killed, 14 injured and around 1000 homes destroyed in floods in 10 provinces of Afghanistan in the past four days."
The minister said the casualty list was based on reports gathered from local sources, and the official figure would come later.
Flash floods and storms have hit the provinces of Badakhshan, Takhar, Samangan, Sar-i-Pul, Faryab, Nangarhar, Balkh and Jozjan over the past four days.
"Badakhshan was badly affected with 36 dead," Mr Attmar said.
"Some 1022 houses were damaged and more than 1000 livestock were also killed due to floods."
He said the Government had launched an aerial survey of the affected areas to assess the damage and provide help to families.
"Some 1800 families are reported to be in need of help."
Badakhshan governor Munshi Abdul Majid said the province had not yet received help from the Government or aid agencies.
"Hundreds of animals, 725 houses, hundreds of hectares of land and tens of kilometres of roads have also been destroyed as a result," he said.
