*snicker* @ "TomKat"

The entertainment media is starting to copy 'shippers! The first time I hear about them was on an ER board. 'Shippers are fans of certain relationships - either established or fantasy. For example, "Carby" fans were fans of the Carter/Abby coupling. "Carver" for some reason wanted Carter and Weaver together. Then, of course, we got stuck in real life entertainment news with the use of "Bennifer" for Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck. It has since spread to "Brangelina" and now this. At least "TomKat" rolls off the tongue as an actual word instead of something that sounds like a something I'd order from a Pier 1 catalog.

One appearance on TV was enough for me but Tom is really taking it over the top. Now with the engagement it's just going to get worse. Help us!

Yup!

I'm sure the names have been around longer than ER message boards. But those were the first I'd heard about and the first time I'd heard the "'shipper" term. Of course, I was more about Bosco/Faith on Third Watch (no special name for them...just "Bosco/Faith" :) ). However, long before that, I was reading fanfic for Xena and Gabby. Apparently, fanfic has been around since Star Trek when people wrote stories involving a certain Klingon and a Captain. Whoda thunk it? Not sure if the fans of that ever called themselves Spokirks or Kir--- oops, can't do that one! :)

Friday, June 24:

Stumbled upon Matt Lauer interviewing Tom Cruise on the Today Show this morning. Cruise was going on and on, this time about what an epidemic we have in this country in regards to ADD/ADHD meds, like Ritalin and Adderal. How addictive and harmful they are. Lauer was trying to explain that these meds may really help some and Cruise should respect that. Cruise was having none of that and the topic shifted to his criticisms of Brooke Shields taking anti-depressants for her post-partim depression.

This interview was intense! Cruise eluded to the fact he wrote a book about ADD/ADHD meds? I need to check on that....

Shawn - you'll know, did Cruise write a book about these medications? And if so, does he have ADHD? Might explain why he was jumping on Oprah's couch now....LOL

All I know is, Cruise seems a little off balance! Sure he has strong opinions - his love for Katie Holmes, etc. but he's almost TOO intense at times. It's difficult to watch an interview with him, to be flat out honest. Afterwards, you worry for him!

Found a 3 page article link on NBC's website...haven't even read it, but Cruise covers several topics, one of which I mentioned above...

Haven't found anything about a book yet.

But here's an interview with Larry King:
http://www.religionnewsblog.com/5216-In ... ruise.html

Apparently, his religion has something to do with his being "cured" of dyslexia, which he claims he never really had but that they (doctors) misdiagnosed him with it. And apparently he's one of those who believes that Scientology will cure one's learning problems, not medication. But he also fusses about psychiatrists in general, saying that psychiatry doesn't work.

Personally, I'm opposed to just dropping a pill on someone's tongue and telling them, "Everything will be okay now" and leaving it at that. However, I'm not opposed to medicine (obviously!... since I work in health care. :) ). There are some problems that require medication -- whether they are physical or emotional. Sometimes, conditions that are classified as "emotional" are the result of a physiological problems as well - such as a chemical imbalance in the brain. But I think there's a lot to treating emotional problems with face-to-face therapy also. It's the same as how you would treat an injury with medicine to fight the pain. But you also need therapy to help the injured limb regain range of motion or stability.

I suppose I can see where he's coming from to a point. Sometimes we do see a lot of over-medicating (and self-medicating -- people trying to give themselves a cure and taking other people's medicines without a prescription or without consulting a doctor first). Remember Lynette? :) However, medication is part of the cure.

I didn't know that about Brooke Shields. Good for her...I hope she's doing better.

I just now read this thread. I'm with Alicia on this one. I should be so lucky to have someone act like that about me! lol
Who knows if they will stay engaged and ever get married but they both seem to be having the time of their life and I think their passion for each other is intriguing. They look so happy. I'll cut them some slack and let them enjoy this time.

However, he would probably be happier with Frick!!

Me either Sunny. I saw the end of the interview and that was enough for me. I posted the transcript for anyone to read also. Tom C. cuts off Matt L., several times. He wasn't exactly rude, but determined to get his point known. If you read the interview transcript, Cruise touches on several topics. But this last one about Ritalin was pretty intense. Enough for me to be even more concerned about Katie H.! Wow and to top that off, she's converting to Scientology! Wonder what her family thinks.

I recall the L. Ron Hubbard book "Dianetics" from before he started this "church"; it was one of the "books of choice" for convicted felons, as it makes denial-of-responsibility claims (implanted thought processes by ancient aliens?) which would appeal to guilty consciences.

As to anti-Rx claims...if I didn't have my maintenance RX (DSS, anxiety, dysthemia), I'd have been dead years ago.

Scientology = "toro-caca", IMHO. :larrow:

Katie Holmes' Hometown Reacts

TOLEDO, Ohio, June 24, 2005

(AP) The giant engagement ring and an Eiffel Tower proposal have quelled most doubts in Katie Holmes' hometown about her relationship with Tom Cruise.

It hasn't, though, stopped the squawking about her sudden interest in Scientology Cruise's religion.

So many are surprised because they say it all seems out of character for the actress known for her girl next door charm.

Holmes, 26, graduated from an all-girls Catholic school where nuns wander the leafy campus. And on her trips home for holidays, she still would attend Mass with her parents.

"I wonder what the nuns are thinking now," said Jeanne Meyer, a Toledo native. "I'm surprised she's going so far from her origins."

Wholesome, innocent and genuine are words normally associated with Holmes. Her whirlwind romance and newfound curiosity in a mysterious religion don't fit the image created.

"She just seems like she's lost," said Aimee Meara, 24. "Since she's been dating Tom Cruise, she doesn't know the person she is."

Others aren't as concerned. "Everyone's entitled to their own beliefs," said Karen Rosebrock, a Catholic in Toledo.

Cruise, 42, and Holmes, who went public with their relationship in April, were engaged a week ago in Paris.

On NBC television's "Today" show Friday, Cruise was asked if he could be with someone who doesn't have an interest in Scientology.

"Scientology is something that you don't understand," he told interviewer Matt Lauer. "It's like you could be a Christian and be a Scientologist."

The actress's uncle, Richard Holmes, said he's not concerned about how she will hold up under the scrutiny.

"She's a very intelligent and mature girl," he said.

He dismissed those who question the relationship. "They don't know her," he said. "They don't have the slightest idea. We back her 100 percent."

And about her decision to take Scientology classes, an applied religious philosophy that critics say is a cult engaged in mind control. "Let him without sin cast the first stone," uncle Richard said.

Others in the family are clearly tiring of the attention.

"We're happy for them," sighed older sister Tammy. "That's all I'm going to say."

It seems like everyone who's ever come into contact with Holmes has been bombarded with interview requests from reporters.

"It drives me insane," said Wendy Davis, who five years ago bought the modeling and acting agency where Holmes got her start. Davis, who has never met the actress, said her students think the attention on Holmes' engagement is silly.

Holmes is the youngest of five siblings, the daughter of an attorney in a town where hot dogs and bowling still equal a decent night out.

She got her big break at a modeling show in New York in 1995. During her junior year of high school, she spent six weeks studying acting in California, mailing her assignments to her teachers in Toledo.

Still, she stayed grounded despite appearing in her first movie, "The Ice Storm," before graduating from Notre Dame Academy.

She turned down an audition for television series "Dawson's Creek" because she was finishing a high school production. She, of course, still got the part.

Her latest film, "Batman Begins," opened last week.

Now those in her hometown are left to wonder if the girl who always embraced her Midwest roots has changed.

"Maybe she's becoming like all the other people in Hollywood," said Rachel Snitch, who graduated from Holmes' high school in 2000.

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise

EMISSION: POSSIBLE: Pacey, you'd better sit down for this one: Katie Holmes is pregnant with fiancé Tom Cruise's baby, the Mission: Impossible star's spokesperson tells People. "Tom and Katie are very excited, and the entire family is very excited," says the rep, who, I will venture, is "very excited" herself. No further details on the baby (let alone the wedding date) were made available, although there is early spec that, if it's a boy, Cruise will name him Kal-El Ron Hubbard.

____________________

You have to WONDER what they'll name this baby.......and if Tom Cruise's couch still has springs left, from all the jumping up and down he's been doing.

The guy's still a nut and I was hoping she'd come to her senses. Sigh, guess she's not going to do that now! Oh well, I do wish they well.
