Did you tell her that is fine as long as you got a wireless computer to take out on your deck with you?

I am serious... when the internet is down or there's a computer problem, I just cannot function. I don't miss the computer if I'm away and there's no computer, but I sure do when I'm here and it's not working.

Cruise is making uninformed--and I hardly consider reading "research papers" written by a bunch of $cientology cult members to be informed--and harmful statements about psychiatry, psychology, and mental illnesses. Vitamins and exercise are the cure-all for severe depression? Please. Cruise and his ilk think people get "clear" of ancient aliens by grabbing onto a couple of soup cans and getting e-metered.
Cruise's statements, when taken by fans or others easily swayed by celebrity to be correct, encourage the dismissal of mental illness as something people can easily overcome. When taken seriously these statements also add to the stigma of the act of seeking help for mental illnesses--something which takes a tremendous amount of strength anyway, and even more when one is ridiculed for it by a high school dropout and cult member who claims to know more about psychiatry and mental health than educated and licensed physicians and researchers.
His former publicist, Pat Kingsley, must have had an enormously tight rein on this guy because he went all these years without revealing his own mental imbalances and issues. Now that his $cientology sister/publicist is allowing him to be himself, I can only hope it destroys his career. Kingsley must be crying with laughter.
Here's the transcript and video of his interview with Matt Lauer.

And here's an excellent op-ed piece about it:

Here's the National Mental Health Association's response to Cruise's idiocy:

Word is WoTW is a crap movie and that's why no advanced reviews are being allowed. It sure isn't on my summer movie list.
And dear Katie: $5 million to hang out with this nutjob for 5 years? You picked the wrong time to be an escort for hire, dear.

It also makes you wonder if Nicole Kidman is thanking her lucky stars for getting out of their marriage! I can't even remember why they broke up now but she seems the total oposite of Tom Cruise right now - calm and peaceful!
It is a shame he's saying meds are not necessary. I hope there aren't fans out there that toss their Rx bottles in the garbage b/c Tom Cruise said it's okay to. Can you imagine the repurcusions of decisions like that, multipled by the number of fans he has? Yikes!
Watched Letterman last night and his jokes must be a day or two behind. He was congratuating Cruise/Holmes on their recent engagement and the jokes very harmless. He said Katie is happy now to be giving up high heels. At if Tom Cruise is short, is the least of his worries now! LOL
Can only wait until Letterman and his team of writers get a hold of the latest goings on. Next weeks shows will be FUNNY, no doubt. And kinda sad too.

THE BOY IS GONE: Tom Cruise's very public meltdown continued Friday on NBC's Today show. During an interview with Matt Lauer, Cruise went postal when the topic turned to his recent criticism of Brooke Shields for taking antidepressants. "You don't know the history of psychiatry," the Scientology-obsessed actor snapped at Lauer. "I do. You don't even know what Ritalin is. If you start talking about chemical imbalance, you have to evaluate and read the research papers on how they came up with these theories, Matt, OK. That's what I've done." Paging CVS rapid refill...

I worked with a girl at UK who said she went to school with Tom in Louisville and that he was weird back then and not all that cute (and this was at least 15 years ago when she said it).
John Travolta is one that bothers me more than Tom. He has a certain attitude in interviews that he used to not have (like back during Grease and SNF). He seems to have (IMO) a somewhat condescending, self-righteous air about him now. Nevertheless, I like him as an actor and there are several other Scientologists who I like as actors (Kirstie Alley, Sharon Stone, Catherine Bell, Jerry Seinfeld). Just as there are those who can't change my opinion about who I vote for or how I feel about a political issue, they can't change my faith either. I don't understand it and I don't agree with some of their views. I consider it something of a cult (and I've dealt with cults before). But, hey, the way I see it, faith is faith and if it gives them peace and strength, more power to them.

Funny you should mention Travolta. Jim and I were just saying he's one too - Scientologist. I said I didn't think he came off as crazy as Tom C. is now. Jim just said - they're all nuts, they shun medication! That's clearly why Cruise came out against Brooke Shield's decision to take meds. Who is he to say what she can or can't do? This takes me back to what I remember about Catechism classes, early 60s - it was the Catholic Way or no way back then. No thanks, I'd rather make my own decisions, thank you very much.
That friend's comment probably stuck with you Shawn. Justifiably so now.
I'm just glad I was never a huge fan of his, otherwise I'd be pretty upset at his behavior of late.
Mary
PS - oh about my hottie, George Clooney. Nina's Jouralism Teacher went to college with him, at NKU (Northern Kentucky U.) and maintains he was a real jerk back then. Nina enjoys telling me this now....LOL

As someone who has known some severely depressed people and some way over the top ADHD kids who have all had their lives restored by taking drugs, I just cannot support a blanket statement like Cruise makes. Yes, doctors over medicate us, especially with antibiotics. However, chemical changes do happen in depression and drugs do help get people outta those depressions.
IMHO there is a time and place for appropriate drug therapy and for many it is a life saver. Poo poo on Tom Cruise!
Not going into personal details here, but he is full of crap!!!! BTDT, with severe depression, suicidal tendencies, ADHD in my family. People should not talk about things such as this publicly unless they really know the whole story!!

Gosh it's just getting worse, this guy is such a nutjob. He just has this know it all attitude (I'm right everyone else is wrong) that just drives me nuts. I personally have a relative that would not still be living today had she not been treated with meds. I really wanted to see the war of worlds but I'm going to hold back now, I just can't support this guy.

Nah, you're mixing faith with religion. Yeah, scientology is a religion. But my point that I was trying to make is that if somehow some people get something out if it that helps on the inside, then good for them. It's not my cup of tea, that's for sure. Neither is Judaism, Hinduism, snake handling, speaking in tongues, or getting tattooed. Faith is about what you believe in on the INSIDE. Religion is about all those OUTWARD things that people do to express their faith and/or convince others to join their faith. Yeah, it's more than that too, but it would take a page and a half and then some to really get into all the in depth stuff and differences.
IMO, Scientology is not a "faith" although people may have faith in its teachings. It's a religion (of sorts). But just as there are extremists who preach/practice Islam (need I mention names?) and extremists who preach/practice Christianity (Jim Jones, David Koresh, and other cults), there are probably extremists who preach/practice Scientology. It does appear to be very cult-like and it probably is a cult. However, there is ritual abuse in some Christian cults also. And we all know the stories of sexual abuse in the organized churches.
It'd be nice if we lived in a world where everyone simply prayed to the higher being in whom they believe and carried on as peaceful, loving, human beings, striving to live as their faith directs them. Unfortunately, some people feel that if you don't believe as they believe, they either need to change you or hurt you. I have to wonder how many have crossed or tried to cross the line into acts of ritual abuse and then defended those actions by claiming it is their Constitutional freedom to practice the religion of their choice.
In short, I'm not defending what the Scientologists do. I'm just saying that there's probably bad apples in every group. Heck, a lot of people (here on the board even) could put me in that category and claim there's no way I could be Christian. Whatever. It's about faith and mine won't be shaken.
And I sure as heck wouldn't surrender it for someone I love.

Okay, we'll focus on religion then
It is not a religion. A bizarre story made up for kicks by a sci-fi writer, about 75 million year old aliens taking over everybody and getting exorcised from today's humans via soup cans, is hardly a religion.
It is a cult that preys upon weak and downtrodden people, then sucks all the money it possibly can out of them. Any organization where it costs increasingly larger amounts of money to achieve a state of grace (they call it 'clear') should not be called anything but a cult.
The higher muckity-mucks in $cieno will go to any lengths to stop any bad publicity about them--they call it "Fair Game." This can include absolutely destroying the lives of reporters, journalists, average joes, and others who publicly disagree with $cienos and point out the rampant abuse of the lesser $cienos (i.e. the poor ones--celebs get a cheap and pretty ride) and their insidious attempts to infiltrate all areas of society. Fair Game can even include injurying the parties that $cieno finds objectionable. Fair Game was supposedly cancelled in 1968 but it is still in use today.
The $cienos are so against psychiatry that they are pushing a bill in Florida to keep children in public schools from using mental health services--and to have any mental health diagnosis the child receives become a permanent part of their school record. Currently this notation is only in school record if the school takes part in the treatment, or if special classes are required. You can read about their bill here: http://www.sptimes.com/2005/04/09/State ... sh_m.shtml
They also run Narconon, which purports to help people get off drugs. Administrators of Narconon programs tell people in the program that psychiatry kills. Narconon costs a hell of a lot of money, too--it is said it takes $15,000 to get all the way through the program. The true Narcotics Anonymous, sometimes unofficially called NarcAnon, is free. It's rather obvious they chose the Narconon name to confuse and take advantage of people in desparate situations. They also hide behind other front organizations with names like "Citizens Commission on Human Rights" and "Applied Scholastics."
My point here is that they are not some harmless little 'religion' minding their own business. They are actively and, more importantely, subversively trying to stop millions of people from benefiting at all from psychiatry and psychotropic medications. And while they're doing that, they are getting hideously rich off emotionally weak people who can ill afford to give up everything they own and be segregated from their families and loved ones.
They make me sick. Betcha couldn't tell
