SO much for a slow severe weather season

Severe weather season 2003 has picked up in an explosive way with the number of severe weather reports in excess of 1000 reports in just the last 3 days.

Wait till this system that's blowing in here hits the Plains, "POW!" This system that's just to my west, is due in tonight bringing SNOW to us AGAIN! When this sucker hits the warm Plains, "Katie, BAR THE DOOR!"

There were 216 severe weather reports on May 3rd, 2003 and most of these were concentrated in North Carolina.

Look for today to shift focus back in the Plains States as today looks to be a dangerous situation setting up later today (already covered in WxBuffJim's thread from earlier this morning)

You're right SF, the plains states are gonna be covered in a rainbow of colored dots by days end. Then a repeat of the last few days, shifting everything east and south. Get ready for a busy couple days!

As the activity today is beginning to fire up, already many reports of large hail in Nebraska and also in SW Kentucky as of 2:30 pm EDT. Total reports - 26 so far.

I've already seen 2.75" (Baseball-Sized) diameter hail reported in Chapman, NE (Merrick County) by a Trained Spotter. (1.75" to 2.75" diameter hail report - 1.75" is Golf-Ball Sized)

seems like nc has been having big ol storms lately. Luckily they all just fizzle out before they get into raleigh. Well except for one evening when it started hailing, but it wasn't so bad :)

Myrtle Beach just had some Crazy Thunderstorms. The thunder
was lightling up all over the sky. :o Mrytle Beach didn't report any
thunderstorms yesterday.

Wow, there has been a lot of severe weather the last few days. We've been lucky here in Southeast Texas so far. I'm sure our luck won't hold out too much longer though. Our weather has been really nice lately and that doesn't usually last very long. :roll:

The blue dot in central Florida indicates a thunderstorm that contained 1" hail. It was the only cell across all of central Florida. This storm moved slowly southeastward. Talk about isolated!

There were forecasts calling for a below average "Severe Weather Season" this Spring and Summer... during the Winter?

Severe weather season 2003 had started out very slowly, but had picked up in a most frightening way ... already 150+ plus reports and will likely see 300 or more reports before today is over with. (Which would place report numbers to 1500 or more in the last 5 days.)

I understand. There has been so many more than normal already, all at once... not that there was an official forecast calling for a below normal season. Sorry for posting before giving any other possible thought. Happens. 8)

I heard the same thing about a "below average" severe weather season also from several sources as well ...

17 killed so far in last nights outbreak. Sounds to me like this is going to be one heck of a season. Biggest in a few years anyways.

That's true, Carol. The death toll rose slowly at first and then up to that many. Thoughts and prayers to their family and friends.

Quite a profilic outbreak and I'm afraid my worst fears came to be ... I'm feeling so badly for the tornado victims.
