Naples,FL Breaks Old June Rainfall Record

Another 0.6 inches of rain @ Naples yesterday makes the month to date rainfall of 18.54 inches..Breaking the June monthly rainfall record of 17.94 set in 1947.

That was from NWS Miami.

Do any remember what happened in 1947...Let me refresh your memory.

Now I am not saying the above will occur just because Naples broke their rainfall record going back to that particular year..What I am trying to show is that a hurricane can still strike even after a wet June..I have read here that hurricanes will miss Fla this season because the pattern has been so wet around here as of late.

Miami got a lot of rain that year to.

It is pure BS that a hurricane will not hit Florida because of a wet June. The wet June was caused mostly by tropical disturbances.

Yeah I dont know how some people automatically assume that just because it rains in May & June that South Fla will be safe from hurricanes the rest of the season.

Its ironic that the 47 hurricane made landfall in Boca_Chris' backyard following a extremely wet June.

That same year another hurricane hit a few weeks later I might add.

Imagine today... a Cat 5 bearing down on Palm Beach and Broward Counties. Can you say mass panic?

I've actually read the Miami Herald paper the day after that storm. Most of Palm Beach and Broward County area, except for the beach communities, was rural at the time. Many orange groves, farmland, and ranches were destroyed and the flooding was significant. Fort Lauderdale was battered as well.

That storm today would be a nightmare! Any similar patterns this year to that year? I know that year can't be used as an analog since it is before 1950.

That must have been one heck of a storm!I have heard that it was huge in size & that 100+ MPH gusts were felt as far south as North Miami-Dade County..Like Brent mentioned, a hurricane like that bearing down on this region today would be a scene out of a horror movie.

I agree with you on that one Kevin, we've had quite a soaking the last few weeks. this type of rain doesn't really happen until Aug to Sept. We all have standing water in our back yards!!!!

I'm in East Naples...and my god..so much water this month...anywho.

How would people evacuate? i mean especially if it goes west across Fl directly impatcing Naples/Fort Myers, about 1 million poeple combined in those 2 metros, now it's no Miami/Fort Lauderdale, but that adds another million affected by a horribly strong hurricane.

Plus if it decides to turn NW after it leaves the cost, all of SW Florida will get storm surge..so that would be like...So. Florida hell nightmare...ahhH!.

So true..You get a scenario similar to the one in 47 &/or a few other historic canes that have tracked across South Fla & its not only South East Fla that can get devastated,but SW Fla as well..The same thing can happen with a landfall on SW coast moving NE..Thats what makes this area unique as far as hurricanes go & so so vulnerable..Surprisingly I did not here of much damage there after Andrew..Then again I was dealing with the situation over here of being without power & the event itself so info from that area was hard to find.

I believe Andrew's core passed well south of Naples..If 1 day the core of a mean hurricane passes over metro Miami-Dade,Broward or Palm Beach Counties & then passes over Naples,Ft.Myers or Tampa?St.Pete its going to be phenomenally bad for those involved.

We wouldn't have to worry about storm surge on the West coast, if we had an Andrew type event. But it would be no picnic at the beach.

I've got a cousin in Naples, she said it's been "insanely raining" this
month, especially the last two weeks.

I can attest to the unbelievable rainfall in N. Naples. I've lived here for 32 summers and this is by far the wettest June I remember. It seems so strange that the news isn't filled with drought numbers and fire hazard warnings. I'd rather have the rain than the fires but I worry that if we get a real tropical system in the near future all of SW Fl will be under water.

As it is, a business trip took me across state this week (yes, it was pouring) and the Everglades are filled to the brim. There is no place for the runoff to go.

It's also bringing out the varmints! My cat proudly brought in a baby ringneck black snake from the lanai last night. Also, we have a "rat warning" posted by our mailboxes. Makes one feel so safe!!!!

If we here in S.E. Louisiana would again get a Hurricane on the same path as the 1947 Hurricane ,it would be the most critical path for us.
