A waste? I wasn't aware that NHC had a limited number of STDSs they could issue.
Here is the description of a STDS...
Special Tropical Disturbance Statements are used to furnish information on strong formative, nondepression systems. These are usually issued for systems strong enough to produce heavy rains and strong winds that do not yet meet the criteria of tropical or subtropical cyclones. These products are transmitted only as needed.
So in reality, it is a perfect use of a STDS.

As in, for a future depression. This one will never make it there.

Absolutely! They used the exact product to indicate that the system was less-organized than they thought yesterday...In fact I don't beleve they use the product enough...it is a good way to get the attention of the media and others. It would be a really bad idea for the NHC not to say anything lest they get accused of "keeping information" away from the public for an hour until the 11:30EDT TWO was written.
Also...as a side note...I believe there was a certian meteorologist...who will remain nameless for now...that may have lost it yesterday in the ongoing and relentless attempt to discredit the NHC...this met was jumping up and down that this was a Tropical Storm all along (when...quite clearly...it wasn't...there wasn't a dang thing tropical about this system yesterday).
I am sure the insanity started there (well actually a few months before) and has continued today.
It sure looks to have closed off (well to the N of where the nameless met was screaming about yesterday for what it's worth) and even though water temps are cool off the coast...of the center can work out over water it probably would be "upgraded" to depression status although I am sure they are already tracking it internally as such.
Can you imagine the outcry that would erupt if this were to actually get a number?

There was for sure no TD yesterday, this was confirmed by recon. data and visible imagery.
Currently there is a weak surface low over E NC as noted in the surface data. The key is that it is weak although on visible imagery it does look fairly well organized. The strongest wind gust in the last hour that I found was 17mph on the outer banks, although I am sure a few areas must be gusting to 25 or better near the convective activity.
It would seem that there is a growing NHC/NWS bashing movement likely sparked by Accuweather. No matter what they issue or don't issue someone is there to complain or suggest what they should have done. If people would take the time to actually look into the data and apply some of the science they would realize the NHC is seldom wrong, and would help reduce baseless statements. While I am on the subect, WHY in the world would NHC withhold any kind of recon. data?? People should focus more on public education with respect to hurricane uncertainities in intensity and track and storm preparation and evacuation than the public release of information by NHC.

I think people have come accustomed to the NHC issuing STDS for when they having "breaking news" on tropical cyclone information. It's been recently to me that they've been using the STDS for info non-tropical stuff. They would usually wait until their TWO's to report that nothing has developed. Not that I blaming them for anything, but I suspect that they may be under more pressure to make statements sooner because they are under fire from private sources, like Accuwx for not releasing info fast enough. I don't think that's fair
I really think JB and others in Accuwx, have gone too far in their critizisms of NWS and NHC. They need to back up their accusations with evidence, or they will be seen as just lies.

Also, if everyone remembers back to May of last year, they used this product when that wave cross Haiti and kill all those people. I agree with Mr. Watkins, this product isn't used nearly enough. The fact that they've used it twice in regards to 94L is outstanding.
