How many times has your area been affected?

http://www.csc.noaa.gov/hez_tool/states/florida.html

Don't know if this has been posted before, but this is a list of all hurricanes that have come within 10 miles of Florida since 1851.

Also, good little tool to see how close and how many storms come to a zip code.
http://hurricane.csc.noaa.gov/hurricanes/viewer.html
Click on find, enter zip code, then select options.

Pretty cool. There have been 8 storms within 10 miles of my zipcode. They were all between September 6th and September 30th. The strongest was an unnamed storm in 1915. They didn't include 2003's Tropical Storm Bill for whatever reason, but the center-of-circulation-wall passed right over my house. Even still, pretty cool.

There hasn't been a single storm to come within 10 miles of my zip in all the years.

and only 3 hurricanes in that entire time have come within 25 miles. it was 1950 since a hurricane came within 25 miles of the area. before that, the 1921 hurricane and before that was 1852. so they are extremely rare for us here. no wonder we have had such a boom in real estate.

Guess living inland is not all its cracked up to be

Put in main post office zip for my city, "all storms" and 25 miles ended up with 32 storms and 52 days.

Narrowed it to all hurricanes cat. 1-4, within 50 miles and ended up with 23 hurricanes and 37 days.

I'm moving to the mountains.

At ten miles I have 0 Hurricanes and 5 tropical storms.

Expanding to 25 miles Hurricanes only increase to 1, Cat1, but storms increase up to 19.

I had the remnants of Alicia move into the area between Lincoln and Grand Island, NE. That was back in 1983.

The only majors within 50 miles in the last 50 years were
Elena and some gal named Camille.

Passed (center) within 50 miles, or less 1851 - 2004:

3 Hurricanes.

2 TS; 70 mph.

3 TS; 60 mph.

2 TS; 55 mph.

1 TS; 50 mph.

3 TS; 45 mph.

3 TS; 40 mph.

Passed (center) within between 70 and 55 miles 1851 - 2004:

1 Hurricane.

1 TS; 50 mph.

2TS; 40 mph

++ I didn't count systems that became extratropical before entering my region (like the remnants of Hurricane Floyd, that dropped around 3 inches of rain on my area, and knocked out the power briefly, in 1999).

You may laugh, but I did a search just for kicks. (Look at my location <<< and you'll see why it was for kicks.)

Believe it or not, four came up within 100nm of Bellevue, Nebraska. (Of course three were tropical depressions and one was extratropical.)

1) Hurricane #1 of Sept 1900 (The TD remnants of the cat four "Galveston Hurricane)
2) Hurricane #2 of Sept 1920 (TD after hitting Louisiana as a cat two)
3) Hurricane #1 of June 1921 (TD after hitting Texas as a cat two)
4) Hurricane Alicia of Aug 1983 (The extratropical remnants of the cat three hurricane that his Texas)

Note to all... some of the storms that are listed are duplicates. For example, the list above with 40 storms -- if you look, there are really only 30 storms.
