NW Gulf Water Temps near 90 degrees!!

Do you all see the Deep red South of Louisiana and Texas? Oh my, we are only in June and the heat isn't expected to let up anytime soon. Next week Highs in the Houston area will flirt with the Century mark. If a storm makes it up this way anytime soon................

I know it takes more ingredients than warm water. But any thoughts on Rapid intensification when the storms gets in considerably warmer water just before landfall?

For Mobile to Houston is COOKING.

I'm afraid that we will see a major storm get in this area and BOMB
(similar to Charley) this year.

Emily was one of the names I guessed to be a "big time storm"
earlier in the year.

If it comes this way Mike, I'll try to stream video until we lose
all utilities. Of course, I'll be long gone! :D

I'm surprised that the temps. are not higher! It seems like the water should be bubbling just about now! Let's just dump the crawfish in and have ourselves a boil!! LOL. Seriously, it is getting quite hot out there and I do wonder what would happen if a storm makes it way to this part of the GOM.

:shocked!:

I still think of what Arlene could have been with no shear or dry air.

If the sun doesnt burn you the water might... I remember 1992 when Andrew whipped across Florida and didnt lose that much strength in the Gulf it seems the water temps were really warm that year too.

The is fuel is definitely there for rapid intensification. We all remember Charley last year. Very scary for Punta Gorda as Charley rapidly intensified before coming ashore.

T Ron,

Do you remember what the water temps were this time last year around Naples? Were they as high this early?

I have lived in Naples for Five years. This is the earliest i have seen 90 degree SST's. It's been fluctuating between 84 and 90 the past 2 weeks. I believe this will be the case for the rest of the summer. 84-90 SST.

I'm guessing they were in the low to mid 80's last year at this time.

SST is not the factor that should be used, except for storms that are flying, like Charley

Oceanic heat content is the parameter that is used by the coupled forecast models, including SHIPS. This is why Caribbean systems can bomb, even when they are major hurricanes, but GOM systems tend to hit a wall at a certain intensity. The GOM just is not the most favorable place for a major hurricane, except when it crosses one of those warm eddies
