Google Earth - great way to track storms

I am getting the same Error message another poster commented on...saying it is unable to log in to the Google server. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong.

Yes, it's a Google Earth Keyhole file. You must have Google Earth first and open before getting the above .kmz files.

I put together two files for Google Earth. Please send some feedback.

First is called 03L. (Go to http://tropicalupdates.nhcwx.com/03L.kmz)

This has the wunderground SST chart and the NHC Model plots of 03L. Note... the SST chart is to scale in the Gulf of Mexico, but if you look further away from the Gulf of Mexico, there are sizing errors. You can see on the SST chart that some of the states don't line up as you get further away from the GOM.

Second is something I was playing with. This is something for the global trackers. Go to http://tropicalupdates.nhcwx.com/WMOCyclones.kmz

This imports the live official RSMC plots from the World Meteorological Organization and loads them up on Google Earth.

It isn't the cleanest image since it is several images loaded together, but it's pretty accurate in position.

Anyway... check it out. And if you haven't downloaded Google Earth, I suggest it. It's free and it's awesome.

I have google earth open
but when I click on your links for the .kmz files, I just get a new browser window wth hyroglyphics.
I must be doing something wrong.
when I go to google earth menu , add, image overlay, and type in the URL, I get server returned errror

I have my state's weather radar open in Google earth. I saved it to my "My Places" folder.

This automatically updates, right? How often is it supposed to change? I can't tell if I'm supposed to do anything or re-open it for it to update... Or maybe it's just so slow or periodic that I'm not perceiving the changes yet?

Just curious. Not a lot of instructions available & I'm a "by the book" kinda explorer...lol...

Stormie--it does seem that some radar sites will update on their own if you've pulled the radar from Weathermaps. If you look in the box under Places-->[State] radar-->[city radar] and right click on the name of the city radar, then click on Edit, you'll see it has something for Time-Based Refresh. Some radars will automatically have it set to Periodic and every five minutes, some will have it set to refresh only once. You can change these parameters yourself. I've found that if I change "Once" to "Periodic" it automatically selects 5 minutes as the increment.

Hope that made some sense.

HurryKane - thanks! I found that setting, and now I can see that my local radar is updated every 5 minutes. Cool!

Stratusxpeye - With Google earth open, open or run the .kml file, and it will be automatically opened in Google earth, likely in the Temporary folder (that's where mine went). You can later save it to "My Places"...

LOL, I agree. senor showed it to me last night and I had waaaaay too much fun for waaaay too long!

I had a nice vacation around the world and even stopped by my parent's house for a dip in their pool.

I tried to download the program and it says downloads are no longer avalible. It it still in its beta form.
Missed the boat this time i guess.

They had a message up earlier (when downloads were still available) that their servers were getting hit hard with all the new interest and that they were doing what they could to keep up with the load. I bet they will have the ablility to DL and install back up in a day or so.

But where do i get the .kml file for my local radar. I live just northeast of the tampa area in pasco county here in florida. I want to be able to overlay the radar so i can see street level radar. As you know our summer storms afternoon thunderstorms can be quite crazy so i like to know where they are all the time. Thanks

For the weather radar, go to http://www.myjavaserver.com/~weathermap ... /index.jsp?

On the right side of the screen, select your state and hit show. That'll load it up.

I downloaded Goolge Earth and the WxMaps yesterday afternoon and was late going to dinner with friends because I just couldn't quit playing with it. :lol:
