(from http://www.hurricanehunters.com/recco.htm)

/jHHH...
/ is an indicator for this group
j is the code for the level being reported by HHH in this group. The code is as follows...

8..D-value in geopotential decameters (if negative, 500 is added to HHH)

What is the definition of D-value? Just wondering, as it has been given in the first two obs...

D-Value=
The quantity D describing the altitude of a point on a constant-pressure surface by its departure from “standard” altitude: where Z is the actual altitude above mean sea level and Z p is the pressure altitude of the same point.

Excellent, thank you!

So "/8024" means the pressure at flight level is 240 meters higher than "standard."

Let's not say that the center is 568 NM south of it's last known NHC position without being sure ever again.

Thanks.

bah, 516 nautical miles from 2 PM advisory...
568 was from 11 AM advisory...

my apologies...better QC to follow...

(LATER, AFTER REREADING POST)

I DID NOT SAY THE CENTER WAS 568 NM FROM LAST KNOWN NHC POSITION.

That position was of the plane... there was nothing in my post that implied otherwise...

Is this what they are calling the center? or are they still just floating around?

If that's the center, it's right on lat. wise, but not as far west as they had it in their 5pm advisory.

Looks stronger than 39 KT flight levels, any higher wind measurements?
