If there were a reliable way to know that far enough in advance to safely evacuate, I'd do it too. The problem is that you can't possibly know that with any reliability until just a few hours beforehand. I'd have to evacuate every time a storm has a chance at hitting any part of Florida's west coast, and as Charley showed us, I'd be just as likely to be moving right into its path.

That is very logical.
If I were as close to the shore as you, I may think differently... but that's me.
Since I'm located durn near dead center of the state... and I was within Charley's eyewall path, and had no window coverings, I think I'll stay put, also.
Using gtalum's very sound logic.

I've long believed the Saffir-Simpson scale is now backfiring.

Intensity cannot be predicted accurately and as we've repeatedly seen storms can very easily gain 2 Saffir-Simpson categories within 12 hours during Rapid Intensification episodes, and far too late to allow one to change their decision to evacuate.

You basically should do the exact same thing for all situations where you are under a Hurricane Warning
.

Oh, and just because I'm able to say I'll stay put no matter what....
makes the whole question moot for us.....

But this is worth repeating!!!!
let me say it one more time

Almost stayed for Ivan in my house in Gulf Breeze, FL. Really happy we didnt stay since we wound up with mutiple trees though the roof and about 3-4 feet of surge and were at least 5 blocks inland and had a 9 month old son at the time (lets just say no renters insurance sucks! thank go for fema)

Current house is off the same street as the old one but about 2/4 of a mile inland and up on a little rise. So no flooding this time. And no trees to fall on this house either. WOOHOOO

Wife will leave at anything higher then a CAT2 and I will prob leave if it goes to a CAT3. I now have a nice 4x4 that can get back off the "island" if it gets bad.

Ivan we had issues getting back from Milton,FL to Gulf Breeze took 2 days to get back due to the roads not being clear and then close to 2 weeks for the pwer to come back on locally. .....

Im orginially from Va Beach and never had to worry about anything over a CAT 1-2 and we normally have NorEasters that were worse then a Cat 1 or 2 hurricane.....

Cat 4 or 5 coming in at the right angle might make me head north a little and I live quite a piece inland. Andrew came in as a 2 or 3 I believe and Here in BR area we got 70-74 mph winds with some higher gusts. We were without power for 6 days and it was miserable. Cat 4 or 5 I think would be much worse and simply for the aftermath I think I would head north for a few days. I have always wanted to visit the Ozarks

Cat 4. I don't really know. We never actually left before. My mom and dad were panicking for the Ivan threat last year. But, we ended up staying put after all.

Fema helps renters out? I can't seem to get just storm damage insurace anywhere. I didn't know FEMA could help at all. What will they be able to do for a renter?

I plan on trying to stay no matter how strong a storm gets. My building is supposedly built to withstand a CAT 5. My windows will probably blow out though at a strong CAT 3.

According to this, they do: :)

The Individuals and Households Program (IHP) helps renters and homeowners whose primary residences were damaged or destroyed.
