Haiti is
Haiti could be in for big trouble if the northeast quad of Dennis continues to look like it does now. Those mountains will not hold back the water since they have been wiped clean of trees. Jeanne was only tropical storm when she killed 2000 last year.

I don't think that is a fair statement. People are naturally going to be more worried about themselves and storms that are headed close to them, but I'd venture to say that all of us are concerned about victims of storms no matter where they are.

Not to speak for Boca Chris but I can tell you as someone who lives in South Florida, the plight of the Haitians in SFL is not viewed as sympathic as others from nearby countries who struggle to get here. Not to say that is the opinion of this board though.

I agree that it isn't a fair statement. My husband has a ton of family in PR, so we, naturally, will be more concerned with what happens there than in some other countries, that's human. However, I hate to see these disasters happen to any country because it's just devastation. Haiti doesn't need a storm like this by any means.

Not a fair representation at all!!!
We are concerned about all people in harm's way, no matter where their location may be. I think that since this forum is set up from the US that it would naturally be more inclined to deal with the weather affecting where its users are (which would mainly be the US and Puerto Rico/ Virgin Island/Leewards/Windwards). I think that is the reason... not that we don't care.

That was an unfair statement by boca chris. I remember watching Cyclone Gafilo plow into Madagascar in 2004 as a Category 5 and dreading what would happen there.
If we didn't care about anywhere except where we live, why did we put up live feeds to Grenada and Jamaica during Hurricane Ivan?
What about that long off-topic forum thread about the Asian tsunami?
In my opinion and from what I've seen on this board, I'd say we do care about other places besides where we live.

Geez, where did that come from?
Stick with talking about what you know. What you don't know is what is in the hearts and minds of most if not all the folks on this board. Totally out of line

No I don't think so....the number of posts for this topic speak for itself. Now if the hurricane was heading towards ANYWHERE in the U.S. then you would see *many* more posts

Oh, so it's the # of posts that matter? Should we have a dozen threads with posts saying "OMG! Poor Haiti!"?
Maybe the U.S. and Puerto Rico get more attention because there are posters who post here from those places. So of course there will be a lot of posts about those areas.
Plus, the U.S. has a very large coastline, so of course a lot of focus might be on the U.S. when a hurricane threatens.
If we had posters who post on here from Jamaica or Haiti or Grenada, then you'd probably see more posts about those places.
The fact, just because you don't see many posts about these places, does not mean we don't care about them.
