Will Cindy and Dennis combine??

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Will Cindy and Dennis combine??

#1 Postby iceangel » Wed Jul 06, 2005 5:21 pm

My father thinks Cindy will follow her tail back into the GOM and stall and then get caught up with Dennis. It;s just a guess he has, but is it even possible???

Not likely at all. Cindy is continuing to move NE, being lifted out by a trough. Occasionally tropical cyclones do combine. However, there is a prevalent myth that two merging TC's will invariably result in a stronger one (I even saw this myth perpetuated in a recent CNN article). What virtually always happens when two TC's merge is that one weakens relative to the other, in part due to the strong shear on the periphery of the stronger TC. The weakening TC then is usually caught up in the circulation of the stronger storm and loses its identity as it slowly spirals in toward the center of the other.

Thanks, I have been concentrating on Dennis all day.

Fujiwara effect

Rare, but highly unlikely. A japanese meteorologist by the same name observed that when two cyclones approach each other they tend to circle about a central axis between them.

Cindy is forecasted to pay me a visit Thursday night into Friday. I don't think that there will be any recurvature. Besides, a front is going to guide her out to sea.

They say that a ridge will set up after the front and Dennis will then follow a different path once it hits land somewhere in the Gulf.

She's going to merge with a front and become extratropical before the weekend...
