Absolutely the right thing to do. I just hope they have adequate time.

Depending, I'd bet Southeastern Louisiana.

The new evacuation plans require 50 hours in advance - and
Dennis will be that close somtime tomorrow afternoon.

Unless compelling guidance comes from the NHC that LA is safe,
they'll start the new plan.

If it werent for Cuba the keys might be relocated to north about 200 miles. I have a feeling they are going to get a cat 2 storm there.

I think evacuating the Keys is a great move. Better be safe than sorry. And with the guidance shifting eastward today, I think it was the right call.

As for the Louisiana evac plan, I agree dhweather that it will probably go into effect for Grand Isle and the extreme coastal parishes tomorrow afternoon, if this storm continues the way it's going.

Gonna depend alot on the strength of the ridge and the trough in the gulf (Cindy's tail if you will)...if the ridge weakens a bit and the tail hangs around, it'll pull Dennis further north, like it did today with the NW motion.

Think a full evacuation will follow?

Why evacuate the Keys for such a weak storm, if it does hit the Key then it would have to go throught he highly mountainous areas of cuba, these mountains will rip the storm to shreds. By the time it hits the keys don't expect anything more than a weak cat 1, hell I think if the GFS course holds it might even be a weak TS.

They are pretty much in the path, so I'm glad to see this action being taken now rather than later. Better safe than sorry.

You need to look at a topography map of Cuba... it is NOT going to weaken that much even crossing Central Cuba. It is not Hispanola.

It isn't dumb. Eastern Cuba is as mountainous as Hispanola and we know what happens to Hurricanes when they cross Hispanola.

Have you ever been to the Keys? There is ONE road in and out. It is a mess during tourist season, let alone if everyone NEEDS to get out of town.

You can't gamble with those odds.

The Keys need to be evacuated because of their set-up (one road in and out, that's it), and they're topography (they're sea level). Right now, it's just the non-residents being evacuated, although I'm sure the mobile home folks will follow soon. The Keys take a while to evacuate. From here in Homestead to KW, it's at least a 3-hr. drive and can be longer if heavy, stopped traffic. They don't want people out there in strong winds.

Our CBS met just showed a graphic showing what will happen in 2 scenarios. 1) if Dennis goes down the middle of the cone, Key West will likely have hurricane force winds, and TS winds can be all the way here to the mainland. But, 2) if Dennis ends up more easterly than the middle of the cone, it will cause a direct hit on the Keys somewhere, and can potentially bring hurricane force winds here to the mainland.

This is a serious situation which all of S. FL has dealt with before. If they think there is a need to evacuate, then there is a need. They don't take this kind of thing lightly, that's for sure.

I completely agree with this order. US1 is one lane in and one lane out of the Keys. They additionaly ordered mobile home folks out starting at 6pm tonight. I'm glad to see the Monroe country EOC on top of things.
