Good Question (I think)

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Good Question (I think)

#1 Postby rsdoug1981 » Thu Jul 07, 2005 6:48 pm

A local met once said that the direction in which the feeder band convection develops is the direction in which the storm will tend to travel. Sometimes, I've seen it happen...other times it may not apply. The reason I ask is that Dennis' outer convection is developing in a wnw orientation that is south of the NHC track overlay on the NHC floater. Any comments?

Good observation and interesting theory, but I'm not aware of it. Maybe some others can comment.

I've heard something like that. But I think what you are seeing in this case is convection firing up over Cuba that you would see pretty much any typical day in summer.

I see what you mean on vis it does look like he is pointing west. I too have heard the theory about pointing the direction of travel but do not know anything about it's validity.

that's interesting, but I've never heard that.

we'll have to monitor this to see if your theory holds here.

I've heard the elongation of the storm is the direction that the storm will take, but not the feeder band theory.

I've seen that happen sometimes where it looked like a storm was almost reaching in a certain direction. This often happens in very low shear environs though I, admittedly, haven't looked at the shear maps since Cindy and don't know what's happening in Dennis' neck of the woods. You'll also see a lean from time to time.

Whoa! Not my theory! :D If it busts, it came from Brad Panovich, a former WWL (New Orleans) met who is now in North Carolina.
