Any thoughts on Dennis being a CAT 5 or are the SST'S

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

not warm enough to support a CAT 5 System? Any thoughts..I heard on the local news, a weatherman saying no way CAT 5 because the SST'S cannot support such a system..

Pressure is dropping rather quickly, wouldn't be surprised to see 930 MB. But I doubt Cat 5.

It conceivably could reach that strength before landfall on Cuba but the eastern Gulf water temperatures wouldn't support that after it enters the Gulf.<P>

Can you imagine people in Florida seeing Dennis as a 5 moving(or jogging) NNW?? They would get really scared even though all we're getting is outer bands.

I heard the water is warm, but only on the top layer (very shallow). May not be enough energy there to have a great effect.

Wonder if people thought the same way when Camille hit the GOM. Never say never.

I agree with Lindaloo. Whether it's a cat 4 or 5 the catastrophe here is going to be a massive and rapid storm surge. Jim Cantore is saying that it will be different than Ivan - and not for the better.

The waters are more than warm enough around Cuba to susta=in a Cat 5.

And with 140mph winds in the southeast quadrant - I think he may already be one.
