July......1916 cat-3.....slammed into Mississippi and Alabama with 110 kt winds.....central pressure 948 mb/ 28.00".
June......"Audrey" on 6/27/57.......roared ashore in SW Louisiana with 120-125 kt sustained winds........central pressure 945 mb/ 27.91".
Those are the ONLY two hurricanes to impact the U.S. since 1880 BEFORE August with sustained winds in excess of 100 kt (115 mph)..
Other landfalling major hurricanes before August 1st:
July 1909.....near Galveston, Texas.......cat-3.....100 kt....959 mb
July 1936.....near Fort Walton Beach, FL.....cat-3....100 kt....964 mb
**
June 1934.....south central Louisiana.....cat-3.....100 kt.....962 mb**
**- these two canes are subject to re-evaluation by the ongoing AOML/ HRD "HURDAT" project (as is the 1916 MS/AL cat-3). The 1909 cat-3 has already been evaluated, and there's no doubt hurricane Audrey was at least 135-140 mph.....from radar images I've seen and observed storm surge/ catastrophic damage).
FYI....I'm at the hospice......will try to update later, but my aunt is now in a coma, her kidneys have stopped functioning......it's now only a matter of hours
