It's analagous to terrorism - you only have to be wrong once and you pay
a big price.

That is unfair. there are very few roads out of the southern parishes which would be in the most danger incase something changes. It is better to be safe than sorry in this case. This guy is making sure his decisions save lives. I'm not saying it is coming here, but it is an a** saving precautionary measure.

Typical Louisiana. New Orleans is taking a business as usual wait and see approach. Jefferson (the next parish over) is having a freak out; shutting down everything at 10:00 and starting voluntary evacuations at 12:00. Totally conflicting opinions.

Seems SAFE. And if the cane doesn't hit New Orleans, it's a great test of the new contraflow system, and yet another practice run for evacuees. Sounds ok to me, paw paw.

Yep....I know what you mean...I'd rather them hold off and be sure these evacs are totally necessary. It's probably necessary for lower Plaquemines and lower St. Bernard...but I think given the NHC forecast it's too early to make determinations.

The airport is in Jeff. correct? Any news about plans for the airport tomorrow?

The problem for me now is that the airport is unlikely to shut down so my tickets wont be refunded, yet all the things i have to do down there will be cancelled as we sit and wait for the 25mph gusts.

frustrating.....why even have a NHC.

Jefferson requested contraflow but the state said no at this time.

expensive for whom? 4 hours of gov't time on a Friday afternoon (and I know how Friday's are in a gov't office after working in one for 6 years) and the possibility of actually being on the safe side for human life - - - -

I dunno - If I were that close, after Betsy, Camille, up through Lili, those storms that did or didn't make it to us down there - I'd still appreciate the opportunity to make a choice of leaving or preparing to stay. The closing offices, etc. don't want to be held responsible when someone comes back and says "I was unable to get out of town in time and my family/property etc. suffered damage because of it".

Just my opinion - but people know better to rely on a predicted track on the gulf coast (or should) until the storm is knocking on the shore.

Last year with Ivan NOLA officials took the wait and see approach and then Nagin called for an evac only a few hours later. I would think that the parishes could get some coordination with this. Jeff. evacs throw a kink in the plan from the start so I sure hope that this storm goes east.

That whole process made no sense.....wait and see if the NHC track is correct...wait and see...yes its still on track...away from NOLA....wait...wait....EVACUATE....30mph winds.

just incompetent.

But it could change, right? ;)

At any rate--for most places, yes, this might be overprecautionary even without contraflow, but for a place like New Orleans where even a 'medium' hurricane could really put a hurt on, I don't think it's a bad idea to take Dennis very, very seriously.

So, because you are mad your weekend got ruined, lots of people should sit tight and just suck it up if the track changes and they're stuck in the path of a hurricane?
