What's going on in Mobile/Gulf Shores?

#1 Postby sprink52 » Fri Jul 08, 2005 7:10 am

We have a nephew in Daphne who is building a new house in East Bay. He thought he might close on it this week (NOT) but since we deffinitely have "a named storm in the box" he will not be able to get home owners insurance. We have not heard from him and were wondering if Mobile or Baldwin counties have any evcuation plans? 8-)

Not yet, but Gov. Bob Riley is in town and will be meeting with all officials and EMA people to decide when to begin mandatory evacuations later this morning. At 10AM here in Mobile I believe

the only evacs right now are voluntary evac of non-residents of the beaches. they're telling us that watches will probably be posted later today with evacs coming tomorrow morning. we'll know more after gov. riley comes down here later today. i can tell you that, with ivan, folks were told to leave daphne below i-10. i had a friend living in lake forest then and he had to leave. so, it is possible your nephew would be told to leave. we're in the early prep mode here.

Home Owners insurance is NOT available when there is a major hurrican
forcast to be anywhere in your area.

It's very comical... There are many people in the area that think they
only need insurance if a storm is coming... Property and Casualy agents
have the phone ring off the hook from people asking for 1 month worth
of coverage.

I hope the agents laugh maniacially and they hang up on them while they are still talking. The whole concept of insurance is that you spread out the cost of light damage over time (premiums,) and severe damage is distributed amongst all policy holders.

as of noon news:
evacs are recommended for low lying areas, beaches, moble homes, rvs, trailers (both counties)
mobile has said nothing about other evacs
i heard one report that baldwin county will begin other evacs tomorrow at 6 or 7am
gov. riley gave press conference at 12:30 (apparently nothing important was said because noon news barely mentioned it) and he is due here (in mobile and baldwin) in an hour or two; he'll make another news conference then; i-65 will only be reversed once traffic becomes too heavy to move along well
other than that, folks here seem to be doing what they are supposed to: stocking up, boarding up, packing up. we just had a pretty good rainstorm here in west mobile. just what we need! fortunately, i've just about finished outdoor stuff. just waiting for my "cheap help" to get here to move heavy stuff. and we're packing up. my elderly mother does not need to be here for this. hope things are going "well" (as can be expected) for all others in the cone.

Well, I live in Foley about 8 miles north of Gulf Shores. People did not take this storm lightly. Generators were sold out Wednesday evening. Bread and Milk were almost non-existent and batteries all were gone by last night. Gas is still available, but lines are steady. People are boarding up today.

In Pensacola, storm supplies and gasoline were all gone by last night.

I have a friend who is the street superintendant in Gulf Shores, he doesn't think that the new construction projects started after Ivan can survive a direct hit.
They are extremely concerned down there, as they should be.

My brother works for the Baldwin Co. EMA, he says mandatory evacuations south of I-10 are coming. I think that is ludicrous, however I do understand that they have to mitigate their liability in case some idiot decides to camp out on the beach. People in sheltered, strong homes in town shouldn't be clogging the highways for those who really need to evacuate. Gov. Riley should at least open a few storm shelters for those who can't afford or are unable to leave. But he won't. I hope some poor soul doesn't die trying to ride this out in a shack because they couldn't find shelter.

Me to. I think builders insurance will cover damage incurred by a storm, I hope.

I don't think people are as worried this year as they were last year with Ivan. Since Ivan turned at the last minute Mobile's damage wasn't that severe. I remember being so very worried last year about my cats and elderly parents so I fled at the last minute to Montgomery. That was a terrible experience with two elderly parents with Alzhiemers and no power in a small motel room. Baygirl did you know the nursing homes have respite care available. This year my mom, Dad, the dog and myself are going to a nursing home for the storm. All employees will be there and they have a generator. This is a little known resource available to the elderly. I just refuse to let myself get totally terrified this time. Not many deaths occur if your not in a flood prone area and stay inside. Please tell me I'm right about this. I'm also not buying lots of high fat groceries this time. Maybe I'm in denial.

jes, i think we're all just hoping for the best here. i'm not as upset as last time, but i can feel myself on that path. thanks for info about nursing homes. my mom is elderly by age but, thank goodness, she is very "with it" and has just a few small health problems. she, actually, has said she wants to stay but then says she'll go with the flow-- do what we do. so, it's just as well for us to go to my sister's place. but, thanks for the info!
