they screwed up I tell ya

it will be fixed soon, trust me

Not true. I'm in the city of Mobile and I have not been ordered to evacuate. Wish I worked for Battleship Park. Their employees and families take shelter in the USS Alabama. I believe they said it wasy 280 million? tons, could have been 280 thousand tons. Either way, it's said it won't move. These same people sheltered there during Ivan without the first problem. I'd do it!

The mandatory evacuation was all over the local news tonight.

i'm in Mobile, too, and am afraid it is true. check the news stations and their websites. channel 10 had it at 9 and channel 15 at 10 (i'm sure channel 5 had it, too). crazy, but true.

WKRG 5 has confirmed a full evacuation of Mobile County has been ordered. Now having said that, Governor Bob Riley, Mobile EMA and Mayor Mike Dow are all morons for their poor planning at this stage in a serious situation. Mobile survived Frederic borderline Cat 4, we will survive with lots of damage, Dennis. No need to put over 550,000 people in Mobile on the road north on Sat, evac of lowline areas and beaches is appropriate.

crazy but true

I apologize to the young lady earlier that I thought had lost her mind saying they closed the entire county. That is truly a ridiculous move by the governor and I am sorry for stating that I thought it was a typo era.

The above replies all make sense. People will be in more danger on the road than riding it out in there homes. The rush coming back will be just if not more drastic. Folks will be eager to get home to see the damage to their property and cause total kayos on the roadways. You should have seen all the boats left roadside during the Ivan flee. I could here it now "the wife: LEAVE THE BOAT, A HURRICANE'S COMING!!!!

West and North Mobile County are safe

mtm4319 wrote:Here are the evacuation zone maps for Mobile and Baldwin counties (Adobe .pdf files). As you can see, over 70% of Mobile County is usually not ordered to evacuate even in the case of a major hurricane.

Thank you for posting these maps, mtm4319. Looks to me like most of Mobile county needs to stay put instead of participating in the governor-ordered gridlock that looms tomorrow. Only those of us on the shore of the bay, the rivers and bayous need to leave, and we can go to west or north Mobile County and be safe.

Same here. right at Airport and University. And, I was wrong when I said that wasn't right about the evacuation order. I now know he said it but still can't believe he'd be so stupid. Why are there shelters going to be open if he wants us all gone?

Dow has no say in the matter unfortunately. Gov trumps mayor. He's brighter than Riley. Yeah, let's send half a million folks up 65 in less than 24 hours. They'll all arrive wherever safely. Geez, what a nightmare he's ordered.

But, I believe there will be many other like PTPatrick who make a reasonable decision - based on their own situation - to just stay put regardless of the "order".

I am not an idiot. I realize that crazy things can happen...but they are remote possibility. The storm itself doesnt scare me. I tree could fall on the house. I could get into an accident and die on the interstate. I could be killed in a tornado 400 miles inland. In the end, you gotta make a judgement call. The prospect of spending 20 hours on a highway to just get "out of the way" is MUCH worse to me than say, crouching in my bathroom if it gets bad.

Can I get an AMEN on that!! AMEN!! (at least for me). Bottm line is this.

If you:
1. Do not live in a flood/surge zone
2. Live in a well-constructed home
3. Do NOT live in a mobile home
3. Do not have several huge pines in nearby proximity

Then you ought to be okay.

Evacuating north can certainly bring other - if not more - dangers. Gotta weigh the odds and choose what is best in your case.

it was just as bad in Lili. they evacuated New Orleans (a disaster) as well as practically everyhting South of I10 in Louisiana. I live just north of I10, but our family decided to get out also. In the end it came ashore as Cat 1 but I do not regret evacuating. PEople who stayed said they DO regret it.
