Agree. Recon has only sampled ONE quadrant.

Thats pretty much what the recon reported back. Also they sampled the northeast quad which is the most powerful.

Its a hurricane whether recon finds those winds or not. They are there.

Confirmation to what? First VORTEX was 974, the one a few minutes later was 973. With the storm over water and the convection getting stronger, I'd say its going to fall.

I'm just asking for confirmation from a source that says it is a Tropical Storm. I'm plotting here and have been for a few days...My city is on the edge of the cone...what is the link that changes it from a hurricane to a tropcial storm? That's all I'm asking for...thanks, again.

No, I'm saying its not a Tropical Storm.

A couple posters said it was a tropical storm based on the latest recon reports. But it clearly is still a hurricane and saying it is a TS, is just ignorant.

based on the recon and satellite i wouldnt say its "ignorant" to make the case that its really a strong TS/min Cat 1. it may strengthen very quickly but the pressure is way up, the winds way down due to Cuba.

the SHIPS model continues to be very bearish when it comes to strengthening....fwiw.

A) The pressure was 973mb. Thats a hurricane.

B) The strongest winds do not have to be in the NE eyewall.

C) We don't get every observation.

Recon did not find a tropical storm.

973 mb is very low for a tropical storm.

Not sure what the SHIPS deal is, but I certainly don't believe it.

yeah, 973 is pretty low but it may have been higher before recon got there...its not really that important anyway...its not going to stay that high......convection beginning to flare up......

i wish the nhc would make mention of the SHIPS model as they usually do and why they are disregarding it concerning the restrengthening back to strong cat 3...SHIPS definitely does not do this, keeping it at 90mph max.

a quick little lesson for all

winds are what make a hurricane. The pressure is meaningless for the classification.

based upon the recon data, Dennis is likely a cat 1 hurricane with winds in the 70-75KT range

Well, of course Dennis is still a hurricane and is regaining strength since he is back over the GOM, but, based on this radar, the storm is significantly weaker with a compromised structure... http://www.intellicast.com/Local/USLoca ... odnav=none
