Joe Bastardi, "Fish" and The Media
Just wanted to say i've seen some people in the past on these Boards as well in the Chat Rooms, have a problem with Joe Bastardi....some seem to find his attitude and such..irritating...some say he's Pompous at times....well having said all that, i personally like him, i think he's great..extremely intellegent, knows his stuff, always gives excellent presentation.....and is entertaining as well....speaking of Bastardi, he's calling for a new Storm next week.perhaps, which would be Emily..heading towards the US Coast as Tropical Storm or Hurricane.
My Second Bone to Pick is there seem to be several People on this Board, one inparticular, although i won't mention any names...who irritate me with the word "Fish"....for those who may be new to these Boards..."fish" simply means a Tropical Entity that goes out to Sea and doesn't affect any major land areas. I get irritated by this constant use of that word....for me personally..i LOVE big Storms....Its almost a waste of all that energy and what not and a waste of Mother Nature's Time to do all that and then have it not go anywhere, don't yous think? I grew up in New York and live in Maine now, so haven't experienced too many Tropical Systems, although i did live through Hurricane Belle in 1976, and even as a 9 yr old, the excitement and the adreniline Rush is something i can't describe. Having said all this....i mean no disrespect for those who have truly suffered from these storms, especially the ones last year..i know people have truly paid the price for all this....on the other hand.....its all the destruction that these storms cause that make them the Legends that they are....(I.E. Andrew, Camille, Hugo, etc)
Finally to futher expand on the last topic, i would like to say that the Media althouh they will never admitt it....loves Big LandFalling, Destructive Storms because their ratings go through the roof....there is something in Humans......a morbid curiosity, that we love to see bad news....you ever notice that "good news" simply doesn't interest people...if you had a NewsPaper, telling nothing but good news...it simply wouldn't sell!
In closing i would like to just say, i hope all of the people on this Board awaiting the Wrath of Dennis are prepared and heeding the advice of State and Local officials...My Thoughts and Prayers are with you all.

I agree. I love tropical cyclones it is what I'v alway loved to watch/track. I personally think if you build with an a hurricane area then you have asked for it. True for any other person that builds with an a area unfavable for living.
I don't went any one to get hurt but its like heck you walk into a lions cage your going to get ate.

Most of us do like "Big Storms" and most of us are here for the thrill of tracking them. Unless you have experienced weeks with no power, no water, losing everything you own, losing family members or pets you will not understand why most of us want to see the "Big Storm" GO FISH!

Honestly I think most people here bring to the surface that they pray that they don't get a big storm BUT deep down the thrill of one coming close to them is what brings them here...you know, the adrenaline rush that you speak of. Seeing Hurricane Alicia up close is what brought me in hook, line and sinker. JMO My wife says I'm crazy for wanting a hurricane to come this way and I tell her that I don't BUT.....

Having been through my share of hurricanes, I'd be more than happy if not a single one ever made landfall. They are terribly destructive, dangerous, and a damned nuisance.
That said, I certainly know the adrenaline rush that accompanies the approach of a hurricane. It's undeniable. I always feel this weird let down when I've been under the gun for days and then the storm turns at the last minute. I hate that. I'm even a little embarassed by it. I know I'm lucky though when they turn away, and I'm not stupid enough to ever want to be hit again.
I hope they ALL fish. I'm more interested in learning how to predict them...where they will track, how they will intensify, etc....I find the dynamics of weather systems and their interaction with these storms extremely interesting.
We are NOT all here because we want to be in a hurricane.

My complaint with FISH is that many people use the term wrong IMHO. I have watched storms plow into islands and then people on the board yelling its going fishing, its a fish, etc. we need to remember that these storms affect many places other than mainland US. That said I love to use the term FISH and really want any large storms to swim with the tuna.

That cause you don't get em in Maine. Fly down here with us in Mobile, and see how you like big storms. You can stay at my home. I'll be awaiting a PM with your flight arrangements.

You know I read this post and left to come back many times trying to decide if I should post. Then I decided too and this is " JUST MY OPINION"....
I somewhat resent the fact that the thought of a fish is not expectable to you. That being said I DO enjoy plotting and learning about the systems. Trying to decide where this storm should go, how this steering current will effect this and that etc
BUT I had to evacuate for 4 storms last year (I live in a Mobile Home). We lost thousands of dollars that could NOT be replaced by insurance or FEMA. Loss of work, FOOD, etc. (My family depends on our freezer to get us through most of the year for Food. Summer is when we put food up etc.) This took a HUGE hit to our wallets am a parent that has to worry about my children’s welfare. I am also a caregiver for my mother who is elderly and I help make decisions for her. Also NOW Homeowners insurance for us has gone through the roof. Think of all the elderly on fixed incomes that now are not able to afford insurance because of this. Being in Maine now going through the storm when you were 9 makes a BIG difference between NOW and Then.
The statement was made that " people who live in hurricane areas should expect this." Well I DO NOT live on the coast! However ALL of FL was "HIT" one way or another last year! Maybe not directly by the eye but by the aftermath if nothing else. SO should FL be evacuated? No One can/ should live there unless they are "ok" about being hit?
Think about the domestic abuse and suicide that goes up in an area after that area is hit. It is amazing!
I AGREE that Hurricanes are here for a reason however I would LOVE to see EVERYONE go to a FISH with NO danger to life or Limb for anyone.
That being said I will climb down of my soapbox and hope that EVERYONE stays safe in the path (and anywhere the storm is causing havoc)

I'm not even sure this is going to be a coherent response to this post since my blood is boiling right now. So are you seriously saying that you prefer these big storms that you LOVE to devastate communities and destroy people's homes and lives? So that Mother Nature's energy isn't wasted? I'm sorry, but yes, that is disrespectful, because it's easy to say such a thing from your cosy spot in Maine. And don't give me crap about "living through" Belle; that was a weakening TS when it got to Long Island. I've never experienced a Cat 4 and I don't care to. Getting swiped twice last year was bad enough. Live through something bigger than Belle, especially now that you're an adult, presumably with a house, possessions, maybe even children in the path of a killer storm, and then you can pontificate all you want about Mother Nature.
The people of Pensacola and the areas around it are just starting to get their lives back together 10 months after Ivan. Good chance they're going to lose it all over again. It appalls me that you would rather see this storm strike there and become a "legend" rather than go harmlessly out to sea.
So you like big killer storms making landfall, but you don't like the media reporting on them??? If this weren't serious, it would be laughable. I don't even know how to respond to this, but I think the fact that you are making these comments says it all. And I'm just going to leave it there.
You don't know anything.

I'm sorry if I underestimated the impact of that storm. Yes, TS winds can knock down trees, even big ones. Just ask my parents, who lost a 25-year-old poinciana at least a half a day before Frances made landfall. There were big trees down in Miami last night, a good 200+ miles away from the eye of Dennis. But this just adds to the point -- you can't get romantic about these storms.

I see both sides of this. Living on the Outer Banks I always have one eye out there to watch for developing storms. I enjoy tracking the storms (and I get most of my information right here) and I do admit there is an electricity in the air when you are under the gun from a hit.
That being said, I have seen what one of these storms can do. While in my area we have been very fortunate, there have been others within 50 to 80 miles of here that have not. I've seen mobile homes that have rolled over like garbage cans and honestly looked like they have exploded. I have seen what 4 feet of flood water in a home can do also.
I work in the insurance industry so I get to meet with these people who have lost property, cars, pets, and most important to many, memories (photos, keepsakes, etc).
There is no way I would wish a storm here. It is honestly my hope we never see a landfalling storm in our area again in my lifetime. We have boarded up at least 8 times since 1995 and each time I have wondered what I would come back to.
To those in the path of Dennis, my best wishes and prayers go out to you. For all future storms, I hope the awesome power of Mother Nature is wasted in the Atlantic.
