Almost 40 years since a direct hurricane hit (New Orleans)
It is has almost been 40 years since New Orleans has experienced a direct hurricane hit. Betsy being the last on Sept 9, 1965. It actually hit Grand Isle, but passed close enough to be considered a direct hit. It is funny how some cities can be so lucky and some cities so unlucky like Pensacola. New Orleans always seems to dodge every storm threat. I guess the atmosphere and steering currents have to be just right to get a landfall near New Orleans. Yet, Pensacola seems to get hit all the time.

I am thankful. Very thankful. I was just bringing up a point. That is all. I feel for what the people of the Alabama/Florida Panhandle are going through. The Florida Panhandle is my favorite vacation spot and I feel bad for the people who actually live there. The people just may just want to give up and I know they are probably stressed out and depressed. I talked to some people here. And they actually laugh and say they are not doing a single thing this whole hurricane season. They say the storms are never going to hit Southeast Louisiana, it is always going to veer to our east. They said they were frustrated having to board their homes and evacuate for Ivan, Georges, etc... and have nothing happen.

New Orleans did not get anything from Andrew. But, I live just to the west in Terrebonne Parish and got 100 mph wind gusts. Just like they got some action from Georges and us did not get anything. I just turned 29 and only got to experience hurricane force winds only once. (Andrew) So, that is saying a lot. People in the Florida panhandle probably go through hurricane force winds almost every year or so.

I lived in Houma for Andrew and that's the most hurricane action I've ever seen in my life.
I live in Mandeville now and Georges was OK...lol
had a tree branch through the windshield of my car...but that's about it.
I slept through Cindy the other night...but I know we got some decent winds as it picked up this awning thing we have that we park the boats under and jumped it over a 4 wheeler, a jetski, and a fence and put it down on the other side.

So do the ones one the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Now that Catholics in the Biloxi diocese have been excused from mass this weekend, the rosaries might be a little more evenly spaced along the coast.

Hey, I'm Catholic and while I'm not a Cajun, I am a Houstonian! I guess I'm the one keeping Houston safe!!
Okay, I messed up with Allison. But I tell you - I was distracted!! I was housesitting in Webster with all of these rats, see... (long story, much repeated, blah blah blah... )

Like my mama says, NOLA has been spared because of all the prayers to Our Lady of Prompt Succor. Legend has it that way back when, the Ursuline nuns prayed to Our Lady to save the city during the Battle of New Orleans (they even got an official 'thanks" from Jean Lafitte, too), and from that, she became the 'go-to gal' when pratying to keep away the 'canes!
Take it as you will.
