Panic time has arrived on the Mississippi Coast
I'm here at work this evening. Our bosses in Jackson expect us to continue working through the night. Fat chance. People are starting to bail now that the mandatory evacuations has been announced. I live in zone A so I don't know how much longer I'm sticking around. If I do flee it will be to Hammond La to my sister's house. Driving into work this afternoon, it almost looked like business as usual. You would hardly know there were hurricane warning for the coast. I really believe most everyone believed Dennis would hit Florida and not impact us much. The Casinos were still open. I noticed people at the pool at the Grand in Gulfport. People were sunbathing on the beach. Jetskies could still be rented. Only a couple of businesses had bothered putting up storm shutters. If Dennis decides to hit say Gulfport, then we will be in bad shape because no one seems to be prepared.......MGC

Harrison County: mandatory evac of Zone A; all buildings countywide that cannot withstand 80 mph winds.

Dennis could come in at 145 mph. Do they think that a few miles from the coast his sustained winds won't be above 80?
Get the hell out, ignore the slavedrivers. You own your own life. Everyone else needs to get lost.

Calm down.
Grab whatever's important.
And leave. Pronto.

Are they planning to move the casino barges? It will be a severe tax revenue hit for the state of MS if those things are destroyed- my understanding is they can't withstand a category 4 storm.
Obviously, the people are more important, but I'm assuming folks will leave town with Camille in our collective memories.

No, they are 'permanently' moored. http://www.storm2k.org/newsletter/Feb2005-pg6.htm

See? That's what makes people so stupid about these things. Obviously, they mean the eye will hit FL. The storm is so many times bigger than just the friggin' eye. I don't understand why they focus on that thin black line, instead of the much larger storm.mikey mike wrote:All the ‘‘experts on tv’’ where most people get their info, say Dennis is going to hit the FL panhandle. So most are ‘‘flying blind’ over here.

I don't want to sound like an ass, but people still here posting from Mississippi Gulf Coast and Alabama Guld Coast aren't the brightest around.
The CONE still places Mississippi in it. I'm afraid people aren't paying attention there. Like a poster above mentioned... hurricane force winds and tropical storm force winds are occuring miles and miles away from the eye. That's why the eye is just a point on the map. Ivan's effects were greatest 100 miles from the eye!
