Why are you so worried about people??? Most of the posters here are very smart and would evacuate if they needed to. If they aren't, then why worry with them? If someone says they are prepared, what can you do? Go to the coast and remove them by force? I seriously seriously doubt anyone here is staying in a house just feet from the beaches in the cone.

Again, I appreciate your concern, but I have my plans under control.

Well let's hear them then. The whole board would like to know what kind of preparations are appropriate for a category 4-5 hurricane that hits in their areas.

Share a little, we won't bite. Just saying that your plans are under control doesn't benefit anybody, and makes me think that you are either paranoid or naive.

I'm glad everything is under control, now you can help others to understand what is needed to prepare for a major hurricane.

This is your big chance to make a difference. You obviously have the time to post tonight, so don't waste your keystrokes.

Easy now. - That's a little edgy.

I find it very hard to believe that there are any customers to serve at the Casinos at this point--much less up until midnight.
I'm thinking that if I was an employee of the casino and I was required to work until midnight and something happened to me because of my late start at evacuation...well I think that might just pee me off enough to take them to court.

My best friend's sister was supposed to work tonight at a casino, and they just told her to evacuate, so the casinos are definitely taking this seriously. She's on her way here to stay with her sister.
I'm about 30 miles inland from the Mississippi coast and I'm staying put. My husband and kids are visiting his family in Texas and were supposed to be home tomorrow, but I told them to stay put until I give them the all-clear. I have my hurricane supplies and will weather the storm here by myself. I went through Camille here and Elena, both "eyes" went right over us here and I survived, so I'll survive this one as well...

I'm about 200 miles inland and about 175 miles east of where the center is projected to go here. Biggest concern is trees being downed... Ivan was pretty bad but not quite like Opal. I was a little closer to Ivan's eye than I will be Dennis and was VERY close to Opal's eastern eyewall which explains that. Expecting maybe some gusts to 75 mph. I'm not in a flood plain area although just a couple of miles down the road is, so not worried about that.

Oh, I remember Opal's march through Atlanta well too. What a terrifying night that was for me.

I had two preemie babies on heart monitors...newly separated from my ex, living in a mobile home (temporarily until I got on my feet). The babies slept...Mom did not. We had trees down everywhere, tornadoes in the area and all hell broke loose. I stayed up all night ready to unplug the heart monitors and run like hell with my babies if a tornado came knocking on our door.

I've already covered Ivan's trip to Atlanta.

The point is that Hurricanes don't restrict their damage only to coastal areas, or just to the area affected by the eye. A hurricane's reach is very often far and wide...and seen in unexpected places, with unexpected fury.

I just wish people wouldn't focus only on the landfalling area or the thin black line and dot within the cone. Hurricanes go far beyond that...and those far inland who've lived thorugh a few of these things can attest to that fact.

No, they are 'permanently' moored. http://www.storm2k.org/newsletter/Feb2005-pg6.htm

Was kinda wondering why they didn't just wait until Dennis was gone to begin on the sign. Duh!!

Thanks... And as for Camille - I remember her like it was yesterday. I was able to personally witness many of the images in your link. Thanks, that brings back many, many memories... Camille was, without a doubt, the catalyst for my interest in the tropics!

Same here. I spent the night in a shelter at Keesler and I was 6 years old at the time. She made quite an impression on me.

BTW, WLOX TV just announced that the Civil Defense is recommending ALL residents of Jackson County, MS evacuate, with a mandatory evacuation for low-lying areas and mobile and manufactured homes.

Yeah, I remember Camille like it was yesterday as well....
We lived in NO but evacuated here, thinking the storm was going to NO. BIG MISTAKE! I've never evacuated for another storm since.
The center came right over us where we evacuated to-- had 5 pine trees through the house! The wind sounded like freight trains going through the woods around us all night long.

HC-please check in after the storm and let us know how you are. We care!

Hello dahlings, I'm baaaack! Back, that is, from assisting others with their hurricane preparations (namely, Mississippi Storm Magnet). Just so you don't think I'm self-centered. :) But enough about me, let's talk about me!

I do not respond to bullies and that is why I felt (and still feel) no need to answer soonertwister's posts. Plus it's my birthday and I can do whatever I want. Nyah. Thanks very much to lsu2001, HurricaneQueen, crazycajuncane, and all the people of S2K that are such awesome folks.

You guys are cool and I don't mean to worry y'all so...to give the nice people a better picture of the situation:

1) I coordinate my evacs with fellow poster dhweather, who is not related to me but might as well be (brother from another mother). Last year we got most of the kinks worked out with our Ivan evacuation and we are both comfortable with the decisions we make. While I realize that every storm is different and thus every evacuation will be a bit different, we have the basic tenets of our evac and decision-making process down to a science. Because we are nerds that way.

2) Dhweather doesn't make these decisions lightly because a lot of people here in our neighborhood respect his weather geekness and often make their decisions with his advice--along with, of course, heavy NHC pimping--in mind.

3) My home is at 80 feet elevation.

4) I know I'm likely to be on the west side of the storm. However I am not foolish enough to think that a) this will continually be the case until landfall and b) that we will be free of the reach of the hurricane. Thus the house is boarded and all the stuff that might try to flee the yard via Air Dennis is safely tucked away.

5) I have friends and family that I can stay with from Slidell/New Orleans to anywhere from 10-300 miles inland in Mississippi. I get around, yo.

6) We are absolutely continuing to monitor the storm and will make changes in our plan as necessary.

7) The 11 PM advisory (and all others prior) worry me, make no mistake. When I get nervous I default to humor and laughing to try to defuse things and not cry. This absolutely doesn't mean I don't take things seriously.

8) I am not a moron. I have a couple of degrees in engineering and I know what wind does.

So I'm tired of talkin' bout me. I'd like to ask for your prayers for some friends of mine that live in Gautier, Ocean Springs, Mobile, Pensacola, Milton, Destin, and Niceville, because it is likely (not a given, but likely) that they will suffer much more from the storm than I will.

Best,
HurryKane

and one last thing: I never claimed that my evac plans are appropriate for everyone or anyone else but me. And I never will.

Great post HurryKane, good luck to you, Dhweather(and family) and Mississippi Storm Magnet. Happy Birthday and I hope you get to celebrate in the near future as today was kind of a bad day due to storm preparations. I too have taken the necessary precautions for this hurricane, hoping against hope I wont need them. I will evacuate at about 4 am to work... Later in the morning if the weather permits but I'm only about 7 miles from my place of employment. I have packed enough for 3 days if I do have to stay there that long, but I'm anticipating I will be able to go home late Sunday evening (keeping my fingers crossed for that). I hope to continue to post from work as we will have internet access and generator power if the lights go out. Fortunately my employer lets us bring our families with us, although they wont allow my children in the department I work in. My co-worker is coming with his wife and three children and the older girls and his wife said they will watch my two kids. Each family is given a hospital room (own bathroom etc...) so it is much better then going into a public shelter. This is great for me because due to my proximity to the Biloxi River I'm in a mandatory evac area. Hope to hear from you soon and will be watching the posts to see how others are fareing throughout. Reminder to other S2K members that I should have internet access and power throughout the storm and if I do not get too busy at work I will be able to give a play by play as to the conditions in the Biloxi area, so watch for my posts!

Stay Safe!

Just so ya'll know--there are some casino employees that are required to remaim on the boat. Those people are survalience officers. The boat cannot be left unattended. My son is in survalience at a NO area casino and is required to stay. I hope Dennis does not take a misstep there.

I am in my evac location but expect to have some bad storms even here. My hubby is required to remain at the hospital he works at in OS so I am worried about him.

My prayers for all in the path of Dennis and please remember my Hubby and son in yours.

Please all stay safe

Radar, thanks for the well wishes. Like my friend Sheila says, you don't get a birthday DAY, you get a birthday MONTH so we'll probably find another day to do it :)

GOOD LUCK to you and yours and please keep us informed on how you're doing. Same to you, bevgo, all of you and your families are in my prayers.
