We leave our hurricane shutter closed in our bedroom so that it always dark to sleep. It's great.

And CRITTERS. When I deboarded after the Frances through Jeanne period, I had quite a number of frogs and stuff living behind the panels. Found some well-developed hornet nests, too, so those allergic be warned! Also, pets need their sunlight and visual stimulation, too. Our cats were real troopers, but at the end I could tell that they were really hurting for light and to see outside.

I finally slept like a comatose person last night, right through both alarms. Because the window was boarded up the morning light didn't wake me so I was late for work.

And then when I got to work late, I had to sit on the wrong side of a drawbridge for over half an hour while they let boats back downriver. But if that's the worst I get from a cane that's fine by me.

Last year I took them all down only to have to put them up 2 weeks later. If they go up this year at least half of the panels will stay up till the end of the season. Once is enough for me. Might leave the kids windows all the way up so maybe tehy sleep past 7:00am on the weekends

I had mine up from Frances through Jeanne. I was getting light deprivation sensitive though..... when I took them off....it was late September and I felt like hurricane season was finally over!!!! I haven't put mine up and won't until something is impending this year.... but I want to wait until I have no other choice..... cause I know if they go up, it will be awhile before they come down.

I wouldnt be surprised in Florida if the building codes were changed to requirement of storm shutters for all new homes being built... someone will think of it, just wait!

Radar - it IS a requirement for shutters to come with every new home, condo, and townhouse being built. The townhomes being built near me have accordian ones on the upper windows, and the panel ones for the first floor...same with the houses.


EDIT: That may just be Miami-Dade, I'm not sure though....

In addition, they should build roofs in an inverted "wing" style so they don't tear off the houses but instead stay fast, being pushed down by the winds.
