Was Cindy really a hurricane?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Was Cindy really a hurricane?

#1 Postby Stormcenter » Mon Jul 11, 2005 10:25 am

This is from WWL radio (in New Orleans,LA) web page.

TROPICAL STORM CINDY MAY REALLY HAVE BEEN A HURRICANE

If you thought Tropical Storm Cindy last week was unusually strong, you could be right. Weather-watchers at LSU say Cindy actually reached hurricane strength before it hit the coast.

“In the vicinity of Grand Isle, the sensors that we have registered sustained winds up around 77 miles an hour,” says Dr. Greg Stone of the LSU Coastal Studies center. “This was sustained for prolonged period of time.”

LSU has sent their data to the National Hurricane Center, to make the case for retroactively upgrading the storm.

The Hurricane Center retroactively upgraded Hurricane Andrew from a Category Four to a Category Five storm years after it hit Florida. If the Hurricane Center upgrades Cindy, it would be the first time a tropical storm would be re-classified as a hurricane after making landfall.

If they have the surface observations to upgrade it, I think they would in best track.

If it wasn't, it was darn close.

If that data is reliable, they should upgrade.
