BEWARE...

#1 Postby streetsoldier » Mon Jul 11, 2005 12:43 pm

There's a new variation of the Nigerian scam out there. I received an E-mail in which someone with my surname is reported to have died, along with his wife and children. This "attorney" claims to have been unsuccessful in locating relatives, and offers 40% of $20 million IF I give him/them my vital statistics...all the sort of information needed to clean me out financially, set up dummy accounts in my name, etc. No money was asked for (unlike previous scams).

I deleted the E-mail, but I wanted you all to be careful about who you respond to, esp.if it's from a Nigerian source. :larrow:

I have in the past, too...usually, they ask for some sum of money and/or travel. This one is slightly different (in fact, it's the first of its kind I've seen). :grrr:

I've had calls like this, but years ago, not emails....when asked for my SS# I would say oh sure, let me go get that for you....putting the phone on the counter. Meanwhile I had NO intention of giving them any info and the caller had to listen to the DW or Washer going, kids bickering, Sesame Street playing in the background or worse, Barney & Friends. I'd pick up the phone oh 15 minutes later to find they had hung up.

My mom receives letters in the mail, similar to this scam. I get so angry the senior population is targetted this way. It's just flat out wrong.

But thanks for the reminder. I've decided nothing is free in life. Those free vacations you hear about? Well, you may get to stay in a lovely timeshare condo but you had to sit thru a 3 hour presentation and sales pitch. Then put up with repeated phone calls or correspondence when you get home. I never fell for this but others I know have. Same with those "college kids" that come around selling magazine prescriptions - rip off. Or the magic yellow buffing cloth that polishes everything. Sure, that works....LOL

On top of this scam I have been contacted through Yahoo IM by someone along the same lines. I had fun taunting them for 20 minutes before I forwarded it all to Yahoo for account termination.

I have recieved several like that, all different variations of the same thing including this one. I trash them.

Also I have been recieving emails from "Banks" I have never had accounts with and for that matter have never heard of(Bank of the West was th elast one) telling me there has been fraud on my account or something similar. Of course they need verification of my SS# and other id, blah, blah , blah. Goes to the same bin as the above.

I also got one a few days ago, I couldn't stop laughing at these peoples scam attempts... It's also really funny when "family" leaves you money in U.S Dollars when you live in South Africa :D

The scary thing is they wouldn't still be doing it if there weren't folks out there falling for it!

If I believed everything I got in my email: I would have more hair than John Travolta; could borrow 400% of the value of my home for less than the banks get charged; have an account at every bank in the nation, and they have all been hacked, needing me to re-verify; and my wife would be one happy camper

"...and my wife would be one happy camper"...

But now, if you use these drugs, they're saying you could go BLIND...uh, didn't they say that when we were teens? Tough being a guy these days. :(

Oh, Bill - LOL - they're trying to sell ME cheap Viagra!

Sorry - thanks....uhhhhh....not me......uh, nevermind...

Thanks for the heads-up - anything sent to me by someone
that I don't recognize gets immediately trashed - and, if
someone I know sends a waaaaay-biiiig file, well, it gets
trashed, too. Old slow PC can't handle it.

LOL!! I get the Viagra spam and my husband gets the breast-enhancement spam. Talk about having your lines crossed!
