Just finished reading the Mitford Series by Jan Karon. What a fabulous series of books. There is another one that is just being released and I'm already on the list for it. I think I read somewhere it will be her final book in the series and I'm so disappointed to hear it. I would highly recommend this series to everyone. I found myself both laughing and crying with this series.

I'm now starting The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck, an Oprah's Book Club selection. I can remember this being required reading way back in the 60's when I was still in school but I don't remember the story line so I'm hoping I enjoy it.

Henry James' The Europeans

#44 Postby cswitwer » Tue May 31, 2005 12:02 am

I'm just starting James' The Europeans. Aye aye aye! I may not get far into it. Just finished Mario Llora Vargas' Death in the Andes & Gabriel Garcia Marquez' Love in the Time of Cholera. I love summer reading!

I hear John Irving's newest book comes out in July. Can't wait. A Prayer for Owen Meany is my all-time fave. Some of his more recent books have been disappointing, though, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this new one.

Finished "The Secret Life of Bees" and would HIGHLY recommend it. Probably the literary equivalent to a chick flick....

Also finished reading Lilith's Dream, a sequel to The Hunger; what a great vampire story.

Now reading City of Masks and the Annotated Grimm's Fairy Tales. Who knew what those stories really meant???

The Rum Diary by Hunter S. Thompson.

Set in San Juan in the late 1950's so far by what I have read it reminds me of life here on Vieques in 2005.

I just finished Sue Miller's latest, Lost in the Forest; now Alice Hoffman's The Ice Queen, Sue Monk's The Mermaid's Chair, Elizabeth Flock's Me and Emma, and John Fasman's The Geographer's Library are waiting in line. Finals are finished this week and my grades have to be in by Thursday. Then I have a break until 6/29, which I plan to spend gardening (if the rain ever stops...) and reading!

Just finished a book by Walther Goerlitz, The German General Staff, 1697-1945; the most comprehensive tome I've seen to date on the subject.

Next, I'm taking a look at Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic Wars; it is billed as a new, complete traslation, and it will require much study as to its content (from my lingua romana reading on the same document). :larrow:

I'd be interested in anything in this book on how Ben-Gurion managed to integrate the efforts of Haganah, Palmach, Irgun Zvai Leumi and Stern Gang into a united front against the 400-1 Arab/British odds Israel faced at the time of the declaration of statehood. :larrow: PM me, if you find something.

I did finish reading, in short order, "Our Brother's Keeper," by Jedwin Smith. Was a difficult read for me as it was about people I knew in my high school years...true story of the death of a resident of our home town in Illinois during the Vietnam conflict.

Triumph in the end, however, as it takes a wonderful twist toward the end...of forgiveness and peace.

For those who want better to understand the Vietnam conflict's tragedies here at home...an excellent read.

Now reading "Robert the Bruce", and have "Alexander" close by.

I am thinking of revisiting Hermann Hesse's "Siddhartha", "Damien" and "Steppenwolf" this summer; I could use a little light reading.

We're going to need 5 copies of the new harry potter. Noone will be willing to wait their turn. My kids all have money tucked away for their own copies!

Has anyone read "1776" yet? It has a list at the library and I am waiting to read it.
