Share your funniest Camp Stories!

#1 Postby Miss Mary » Wed Jul 13, 2005 1:09 pm

Gtalum's reply on another topic about going to Space Camp in 7th Grade prompted this topic. Perhaps at the time your best story wasn't very funny but now it is. So please share! I must admit too that when I read Gtlalum's post, it reminded me also of the hilarious movie American Pie, and the one character's repeated line....One time at Band Camp..... LOL!

I didn't go to Camp but I'd like to read funny stories anyway.

So post away.....don't be shy!!!

Here's one that happened in November 1998.

This is about the time me and the scouts were getting some lunch ready before we head back home after a nice overnight camp-out over at Camp Wisdom. Adam decided to take his shoes and socks off after they got muddy. Bad decision. A few minutes later, someone accidentally spilled some hot water which landed on Adam's feet, making him do the Irish jig. His toes warmed up quickly , but that's because the outside temp was 55*F with drizzle.

Having gone to church camp one time...when I lived in Ohio...and one of the songs we sang was:

"Grandpa's beard is long and gray...

It grows longer every day...

Grandma chews it in her sleep...

'Cuz she thinks it's shredded wheat!!"

Also, we had a skit night and some of the kids participated (I was way too shy to be in front of the crowd!)...anyway behind a strung up bed sheet a group acted like a team of surgeons in an operating room with a patient and one of them had gotten a frog from the woods and after pretending a silhouette incision into the patient pulled out the frog and the frog leaped away sending everyone into a ROFL!!! :roflmao:

Years and years and years and years ago when I was a freshman in high school, I was the youngest ever to be selected as Unit Commander at band camp. I was in charge of 30 overactive freshman girls. (just like me)

Well we practiced our drills hour after hour, day after day and week after week. On the day of the competition, my Unit was really ready for those uppety sophomore, junior and senior band members. We were going to win!!!!!

I barked off the commands --- first squad to the left flank march, second squad to the left flank march, third squad to the left flank march, fourth squad to the left flank march ---------- as I looked around, I had marched my unit right into the woods!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Funniest camp story... Whew, see, camp is a recent enough event for me, that I can sure remember some things! There's the time those two guys in my cabin decided it would be fun to smoke elephant ears. [You know, the plant?] Or the time we duct taped the girls cabin door and windows closed... That was fun. =) Or maybe the time we put dirty underwear in my couneslor's pillow case, only to have him wake each of us up, individually, in the middle of the night, and literally, rub it in our faces.

Nah, none of those. I'd say my favorite camp story is... Back in 5th grade, we went on a little camping trip... And we were all set to play a game, at night, in the woods. What a WONDERFUL idea! Throwing 40 FIFTH GRADERS into the woods to try and find glow sticks!

My partner and I got lost and seperated from the group. In fact, we ended up on the wrong side of the camp. Which happened to be about... A little under a mile from where we were supposed to be. Doesn't seem like a very long distance, I know. But... I was 10 years old, and it was at night, in the woods. Come on, it was scary.

:1:

My counselors had to come find us, and it was past 11:00 by the time we were back to camp. Man, I've never been so scared in my life.

I went to a Boy Scout summer camp around 1970, along with two of by friends. While the camp was very rustic, they did have an Olympic size swimming pool, with both and high and low diving board. One of my friends, his nickname was Beaver (No, I am not making that up!), decided he was going to try a fancy dive off of the high board. He must have jumped up and down ten or more times, getting higher and higher, and then attempted a flip. If he would have pulled it off, he would have been the talk of the camp for days. Unfortunately, he came down head first on the corner of the board, getting a serious laceration, and then did a magnificent belly flop in the deep end. He was out cold when he hit the water, and had to be pulled from the pool. He was rushed to the hospital, where he eventually got 27 stitches, ouch!

This was long before cell phones, and the camp could not reach either of his parents. They finally called my mom, and left the number for the camp director. Unbeknown to any of us, the camp director only worked at the camp part time, and owned a funeral home not too far from the camp, where he spent a majority of his day.

It took a couple of hours for my mom to locate his mother, but when she did, she got her to the nearest phone to make the call. All Beaver's mom knew was that he had been injured at camp, rushed to the hospital, and she was to call this number immediately. Well, when she called, she heard, "Wilson's Funeral Home, may I help you?"

She lost it, and my mom had to get on the phone to find out what had happened! She realized what Beaver's mom had thought, got her calmed down, and they left for the hospital. To this day we still get a big laugh out of that one, although at the time it wasn't too funny.

OMG Drudd! That is awful for that poor mother to endure but I can see now why they all laugh at that story. Before you got to this part of the story, I was going to say that's an odd combination - funeral director slash camp counselor! One set of customers are so quiet, the other noisy! That is a funny story, since it had a good outcome. LOL at his name and I did picture him jumping higher and higher before he ever decided to go for the water. Does he have a scar?

Swimdude - that is very scary, for a 10 year old. Sometimes the decisions that are made at camp aren't always the smartest. Glad I'm over this phase for my kids!

Karan - sounds like you took that job very seriously! So serious, you forgot to look ahead! That is precisely something I'd do too....I know it.

Eric - was your camp in the Hamilton area by any chance? That's a funny song. I remember many from field trips and girl scout overnights (does that qualify for camp? LOL). The songs you sing at camp or club overnights are just never very normal!

Stooge - Ouch. Bet your friend kept his sox and shoes on from then on!

Lots of accidents occur at camp huh Sunny - maybe we should be glad we never went to them? he he

Yeah me too! And now I'm starting to wonder what all went on when Nina went to camp over the summer, between 3rd and 4th grades! She never gets homesick but was she ever glad to see us when we picked her up. I preferred camps during the school year, run by teachers I knew well. Along with a few parent volunteers. You just felt better knowing who your kid was with! I've never done volunteer overnight duty - long trips that were 10 hours on a Greyhound bus but that's about it and that was a lot of work!

Hi Mary, :)

Yes, I would say that field trips and overnight girl scout outings would qualify for camp! :D Remember years ago, too, about when the Campfire Girls troops were around...they may have been a different organization from the Girl Scouts...I dunno.

The church camp I went to was located in Marengo, OH (just north of Columbus). :)

Here is a Camp letter:-)

Dear Mom,
Our scoutmaster told us all write to our parents in case you saw the flood on TV
and worried.

We are OK. Only 1 of our tents and 2 sleeping bags got
washed away.

Luckily, none of us got drowned because we were all up on the
mountain looking for Chad when it happened.

Oh yes, please call Chad's mother and tell her he is OK. He can't write because
of the cast.

I got to ride in one of the search & rescue jeeps. It was neat! We never would
have found him in the dark if it hadn't been for the lightning. Scoutmaster
Webb got mad at Chad for going on a hike alone without telling anyone.

Chad said that he did tell him, but it was during the fire so Mr. Webb probably
didn't hear him.

Did you know that if you put gas on a fire, the gas can will blow up? The wet
wood still didn't burn, but one of our tents did. Also some of our clothes.

John is going to look weird until his hair grows back.

We will be home on Saturday if Scoutmaster Webb gets his car fixed. It wasn't
his fault about the wreck. The brakes worked OK when we left. Scoutmaster Webb
said that a vehicle that old you have to expect something to break down; that's
probably why he can't get insurance on it.

We think it's a neat car. He doesn't care if we get it dirty, and if it's hot,
sometimes he lets us ride on the tailgate. It gets pretty hot with 10 people in
a car. He let us take turns riding in the trailer until the highway patrolman
stopped and talked to us.

Scoutmaster Webb is a neat guy. Don't worry, he is a good driver. In fact, he
is teaching Terry how to drive. But he only lets him drive on the mountain roads
where there isn't any traffic.

All we ever see up there are logging trucks. He has to spend a lot of time
working on the car so we are trying not to cause him any trouble.

This morning all of the guys were diving off the rocks and swimming out in the
lake.
Scoutmaster Webb wouldn't let me because I can't swim, and Chad was afraid he
would sink because of his cast, so he let us take the canoe across the lake.
It was great. You can still see some of the trees under the water from the
flood.

Scoutmaster Webb isn't crabby like some scoutmasters. He didn't even get mad
about the life jackets.

Guess what? We have all passed our first aid merit badges. When Dave dove in
the lake and cut his arm, we got to see how a tourniquet works. Also Wade and I
threw up. Scoutmaster Webb said it probably was just food poisoning from the
leftover chicken. He said he got sick that way with the food he ate in prison.

I'm so glad he got out and became our scoutmaster. He said he sure figured out
how to get things done better while he was doing his time.

I have to go now. We are going into town to mail our letters and buy some more
bullets. Don't worry about anything.

We are fine.

Love, Cole
