Destructive hurricanes with their names not retired

#1 Postby Mie » Wed Jul 13, 2005 3:27 pm

Hi all,

I come from Finland and since last year’s destructive season I’ve been interested in these monsters. Due to my location I naturally don’t have any own experience of hurricanes :D but IMO they are the most interesting natural hazards of all. I've learned a lot more by watching this forum - thanks to you all and hope the season will slow down or at least hurricanes will "go fish" as you use to say.

Maybe you've discussed this before but this question came to mind of retiring hurricane names: what are the most destructive Atlantic hurricanes which have not had their names retired? I suppose 1994’s Gordon and 1985’s Juan are examples of these. And on the contrary: what are the least destructive hurricanes with their names retired? 1990’s Klaus seems to be one of these...

Thanks for the answers already in advance!

1995 in 1933 records could be beat why slow down? Ok if they are fish then the season can keep going.

1994's Tropical Storm Alberto should've been the first Tropical Storm name retired, IMO. It devistated parts of Georgia and Alabama with floods and killed at least 33 people. They didn't retire it, though. The first Tropical Storm to cause a name to be retired was 2001's Allison, which flooded parts of Texas.

I thought Gaston last year had a chance too, but I can see why they chose not to retire it. It was nothing compared to Charley, Frances, Ivan or Jeanne.

I guess Juan wanted to retire, it wasn't in 1985 but in 2003 he got his chance.

It should have been retired in 85. That storm was a pain in the you know where.

If I remember correctly, he attacked us twice! :grr:

Highly destructive storms that weren't retired:

Juan (1985)
Marco (1990)
Alberto (1994)
Gordon (1994)
Lili (1996)
Charley (1998)

1994 Alberto was the same as 1989 Allison

1998 Charley only caused 50 million in damage

Marco did next to nothing

Weren't the remnants of Klaus and Marco combined that burst a dam or something like that?

Charley caused some terrible flooding in NE Mexico. I'd imagine the damage figures would be much higher.

Dennis will definitely be retired.

Damage in Cuba is totaled at $1.4 billion.

U.S. damage: early estimates around $2-3 billion.

Two Category 4 landfalls (135 mph and 145 mph) on Cuba.

Category 3 landfall (120 mph) on Florida.

Death toll:
Cuba: 16 (Deadliest hurricane since Flora in 1963)
Haiti: at least 40 (at least 16 missing)
Jamaica: 1
U.S.: at least 3 direct (9 if indirect deaths are included)

Total: at least 60 deaths

I've seen Juan '85 mentioned before. I don't remember it being bad at all. It rained some, but New Orleans, Mobile, and the rest of the northern GC averages 60+ inches of rain per year, so Juan IMO is way down the list.

If anything, Danny '97 should be retired before Juan. 42 inches of rain in one spot. That's right up there with Allison.

The remnants of Klaus caused the dam burst. Also, Klaus caused destructive flooding and mudslides in Martinique.

I remember the 1984 Diana approached North Carolina and became a strong category 3, but I guess it weakened before it came ashore and didn't cause the damage it was expected too.

The 90 Diana was retired however.
