I'm 47, 4 kids, and have been tracking hurricanes and extreme weather since I was 10. I suffer tremendous disappointment when a hurricane weakens (please note that I don't wish death and destruction on anyone) but when one is in a strengthening period and then until landfall, I become an insomniac. I find all powerful weather extraordinarily fascinating .... always have, always will.

I haven't read all of the posts in this thread yet but it's seems to me that the average age of S2Kers is much older than what obtains on other message boards.
The majority of members on most boards I know are teenagers. This doesn't seem to be the case here at S2K. Interesting.
Btw, I'm 41 and have been tracking storms for as long as I can remember. I had an older brother who was a real weather nut and fantasized day and night about building a satallite picture receiver. (This was way before the Internet as we know it.) My how times have changed... I can now get those pictures (in living colour, no less) on a personal computer over something called the The Internet! If my brother was still alive, he'd be salivating!

Age 43......became a certified storm nut at age 12.......first hurricane I plotted on a chart? Carmen in September 1974....
Began researching hurricanes a year later after experiencing the 50-60 mph winds from ex-hurricane Eloise as she roared NNE just to the west of Atlanta.....three decades and counting..

I am 29, live in Toledo, Ohio and started "paying attention", watching, waiting and biting nails since 1999 when I had twins for a couple in Boca Raton. I was a gestational surrogate meaning that the twins are not genetically related to me. Still, they are as close to my heart as my own children and so are their parents. We are like extended family and last year I about had a stroke with Frances and Jeanne.
However, I take an interest not only for them but because I worry about everyone in the path of a hurricane , now that I have researched and seen the destruction it can yield. I am a bit too altruistic by nature and go out of my way to help others, regular blood donor, etc. but being up here in Ohio, I feel helpless when a hurricane does strike though I am the first to donate money or goods to whomever may need it.

Age 44, female (don't know how many of us ladies there are). Don't post often, but visit alot.
18 years in Government defense, data security, and telecommunications. Am an electrical engineer. Left telecom management after an unpleasant merger in the late 90's, and used the experience to start a small business that manufacturers some specialty building materials for older homes (1870-1920s). It's a big shift, but doing well.
I grew up in the (nearly desolate) rural south, where my father opened factories. There was NOTHING to do - I mean nothing - except watch the clouds, and ride your bike for dozens of miles with nary a house or a person in sight. (Yeah - I miss those days, even though it was lonesome, I appreciate quiet times a lot more now). So I studied the weather as a hobby, and still continue to learn from these forums. This time of year, it is positively addictive.

43..been into storm tracking since moving to the Gulf Coast (Houston,TX) in 1974. Carmen was the first storm I followed. I remember listening for the latest coordinates on my old multiband radio via KTRH, and hearing the landfall reports on WWL out of New Orleans.

Andrew '92, Katrina '05, Gustav '08, Isaac '12, Ida '21...and countless other lesser landfalling storms whose names have been eclipsed by "The Big Ones".
31, been a weatherbug since Gilbert hit on my 15th birthday, which I spent in a Red Cross Shelter helping evacuees from the coast.
Newly registered but often lurker.
My singularly unique characteristic is that I get headaches 2 days before any severe weather - the more severe the headache, the worse the storm. Lucky me, really.

I'm 43, moved to South Florida in 1984. I came from the midwest, so had no idea about tropical weather. I got interest shortly after moving here, we had some kind of tropical system hit in November, must have been 85 or 86, not sure if it was a minimal hurricane or what. Just remember standing in line at the grocery store, for the first time, buying storm supplies, and the storm was already affecting us. After that I became very interested, and wanted to be more prepared next time. Been watching them ever since, in awe.
