Hazel (1954), Agnes (1972), Floyd (1981) Bob and Kate (1985), Chris (1988) Iris (1995), LUIS (1995), TD Debby (2000) directly. Numerous other indirectly. Oops, almost forgot Charley last year!!!!

First two were in PA, some in SW FL and the others in St. Maarten most notably Luis.

Per the last "personal question" I'm so old that I lost track.

I grew up in SE FL --- And had my first one before they named hurricanes.
And I had CharleyFrancesJeanne cross over me in Central FL last year. .

So my answer is either Too Many or Not Enough Yet

Frances 2004 and Jeanne 2004, after they had weakened to Tropical Storm strength. But Charley is the one I will remember, despite and because of the fact that it missed us.

Numerous tropical Storms and probably some forgetable Hurricanes in the intervening years.

All the following were within 100 miles of me, most closer. Only the ones with "*" were memorable.

*1948 - Hurricane -Not named
1953 - TS Hazel
1959 - Hurricane - Not named
1960 - TS Florence
*1962 - Hurricane Alma
*1964 - Hurricane Cleo
Hurricane Dora
1998 - TS Mitch
Hurricane Irene
1999 - TS Harvey
2001 - Gabriella
*2004 - Hurricane Charley
* Hurricane Frances
* Hurricane Jeanne
However, I lived in CA, TX, and GA between 1968 and 1990 so I missed a lot.

Been grazed by too many to remember. Was nailed by Andrew. It changed my whole attitude about hurricanes.

My experience, in general, agrees with DH's. Except I was 12 in Camille. Here's the rest of the list:

1965 Betsy – Lots of wind and a long night; my first storm.
1969 Camille – We all know THAT story...
1979 Frederic – Noisiest storm with the winds consistently from the NNE.
1985 Elena – Coming here, going there, coming here; She's baaaaack!!
1998 Georges – Longest storm in my memory.
2004 Ivan – Brushed with only the gusts, put no power here for two days...

I've stayed right here - in the same house - for each one. Fortunately, we're about 30 feet above MSL, so surge is not a problem. Plus, it's a sound, solid structure and properly boarded anytime there's a potential landfall forecast for our area.

Tropical Storms: 87-Arlene, 95-Allison, 96-Arthur and Josephine, 02-Kyle, 04-Gaston. Some were direct and others were what was left after they made landfall somewhere else. Probably forgot a few too.

Can I claim Camille? I wasn't here but my mom was pregnant with me at the time.

Frederic in 1979...it was the first one I remember. Was out of school for several weeks. Didn't have power for 3 weeks. Lots of trees down.

The next one I remember was Elena in 1985. The one that skirt the coast from one end to the other. I just got the rain when it came back and forth.

I don't remember any more until 1995 (Opal) We just got rain and light wind. Florida got hit hard.

Even though in 1997 I was in Birmingham Alabama I remember Danny. I was pregnant with our first child. Danny was hitting the Mobile area and slowly moved up toward us. I think Danny push me into labor. :lol:

And then in 1998 Georges visit the Mobile area. Yes another baby was born. I have hurricane babies.

Then in 2004 Hurricane Ivan hit. Something I will never forget. And yes I was in Daphne when it hit.

So far this year I have been in Arlene which I went down to Orange Beach and watch her come in. It was exciting and nothing like I thought. But a false sense of security there. Just rain, clouds, and mild waves.

Then Cindy woke me up one early morning with the wind blowing against my bedroom windows. The girls jumped in the bed with me because they could hear the rain pounding against the windows in their room.

And of course Dennis came right behind Cindy. Dennis was not that bad here. I think Cindy might had been worse here. Dennis really hit Florida hard!

And no telling what else is in store for 2005. I am scared!

Charley & Jeanne. Like a dumbell, drove back to FL through what was Frances as it moved through Atlanta area. :roll:

With Charley, that was the wierdest, how we saw the bands coming over. They were wicked, and those clouds were unlike any I'd ever seen. Once it was going on, the winds were spooky, and from the noise, I just knew our roof was gone (really just lost a bunch of south-side shingle tabs). We thought we could watch from a north-facing window, as a nearby house kind of blocks the wind. We got a light show from several transformers blowing up (bright green), and then something really smacked the window. We then were in the hallway, with three crybaby cats in their taxis. When the eye went over, I peeked out of our side garage door. The sky was wierd, with really dark clouds all around, but I could still see the overhead sky itself - can't really describe it - but awesome. You could really feel the power in the air, too. My ears were fine (no popping or pain).

Jeane was just a really long windy day. Not a lot of rain (maybe it was all driven in the winds and less noticeable), but nothing like Charley.

It was cool in a way to experience riding the eye, but not at the cost to the state in lives lost and property damage. I'd rather not have these memories.

HUGO !!! I can honestly say it was a life changing experience for me. I will say that all the other canes and storms that have brushed Charleston are pale in comparison. I did 5 years in Kansas, and got involved with Sky Warn. I did get to see 4 tornados, 95 mph straight line winds, and got caught in baseball size hail. Still to this day though, Hugo was the biggest adrenaline rush in my 39 years!!
