My Pet Tommy, the (Farmer) Turtle

#1 Postby Dee Bee » Sat Jul 16, 2005 11:15 am

Bizarre gardening note:

My pet box turtle, Tommy, loves tomatoes. One of his favorite meals is chopped grape tomatoes. Each morning I usually toss the previous day's water from his dish in his pen into a couple of nearby potted palms (to conserve water). Imagine my surprise when at the beginning of June I noticed a few non-weed plants growing with the palms. Imagine my further surprises when those plants not only flowered but also produced -- you guessed it -- grape tomatoes! Well, the crop has been plentiful although it's not really growing season in FL, so it won't last long because of the heat.

A bit gross but fascinating to think that Tommy's been able to literally eat the same food twice!

When my niece was in pre-school...anyway, one morning a box turtle happened by in our front yard and so my mother and I took the little guy to her pre-school where my niece enjoyed showing him to her classmate friends before their class officially began that day...afterward we then took the turtle back to the woods. :)

We used to have box turtles as pets when I was younger as well. we'd set up pens in our back yard. My friend, Dorothy and her brother Steven were my next door neighbors and they had more room in their backyard to create a more elaborate one.

I've seen a box turtle in my back yard this year a couple of times. One day he was nearby my per baby bunny (see thread), Peter so I named him Cecil!
