Have a bet to settle and I need YOUR help!

#1 Postby PurdueWx80 » Sun Jul 17, 2005 6:17 pm

This involves a long story and I'll spare the details for now, but I need your help.

Tell me the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Berkeley, as in the school in Berkeley, CA. AFter that, if there is anything else you might want to add, please do. Thanks so much in advance!

And, hmmm, smart folks with a definite liberal lean. And fog. Lots of fog.

Freedom of speech

[Also, totally not related to the university, I think of Berkeley, IL the town next to my hometown, Hillside, IL where many of my friends lived. Berkeley, IL is also home to the manufacturer of those useless blowing hand dryers in public washrooms...! ]

Don't want to be too serious here but the first thing that came to my mind was Vietnam war protests.

For obvious reasons, I remember it as the birthplace of my initials...SDS, and the weatherman faction of that radical group.

My initials are SDS...and of course I consider myself a weatherman...but not for the same reason that they did.

So far, yes. A friend of mine who went to Berkeley was furious that I didn't know Berkeley was one of the top schools in the country, as it has the most number 1 graduate programs of any school in the country (more than any Ivy League school even), among other honors. I told him I'd have no reason to know this because Berkeley has no program in meteorology and all we ever hear about the place is that a bunch of old hippies live there, in addition to everything everyone has said here. He accused me of not seeking out the truth beyond what everyone assumes about the place (oh brother), and I accused him and other Californians of thinking that the world revolves around them. Needless to say, that ticked him off so we got in a huge debate. In any case, thank you all for your backup! :)
