Half or more of these people die -- they are simply swept out to sea on the Gulf Stream and never seen again, or their makeshift plywood & plastic bottle boats sink or fall apart miles from shore. Those that do reach US waters have to run a gauntlet of Coast Guard vessels and plant their feet on soil lest they be picked up and returned. A very small percentage make it, but it does not deter more from trying.

Cuba is a total hellhole of grinding poverty and misery, with a small off-limits-to-natives sector of pricy hotels in Havana where the Party can suck in tourist money from naive travelers who note the finery around them and assume that nothing is amiss in the socialist "paradise".

See here: http://www.therealcuba.com/ (includes new preface regarding declination of foreign aid; see especially the "Two Cubas" within).

OK, sorry I got a political thread going.

But I thought it interesting that Hurricane Dennis may be historically significant if it changes the government of Cuba.

Here is a link that any one with an open mind about Cuba should read:

While you may not appreciate the messenger, that's actually a good piece.
