If you had to create your own hurricane name list
Don't you just hate the hideous names the hurricanes are given? (well, most of the names anyway). So, just for fun, let's create our own name list. I picked my favorite names for each letter. Female is on the left. Male is on the right.
Here is mine: Female- Ashlynn Male-Austin
Baylee Blaize
Cierra Christopher
Destini Dawson
Erica Ethan
Faith Fabian
Gracelyn Grant
Hailey Hayden
Isabella Isaac
Jade Jace
Kaitlin Kade
Lainey Logan
Macie Matthew
Natalie Noah
Olivia Oscar
Pamela Patrick
Roxie Ryan
Sarah Seth
Trish Tyler
Valerie Victor
Wendy Wayne

I read in a book, yesterday actually, that certain black communities around the United States are angered over the fact that hurricanes only have "white names." I don't see any problem with this, at all!
Well, except for people like Dan Rather.
"Hurricane Shaniqua is moving North at 15 mph..."
I think everyone would get a laugh out of that.
[Disclaimer: Hopefully everyone can understand that I read this in a book, and i'm not trying to be politically incorrect here.]

It is a fact. Sheila Jackson Lee made a little stink about this last year. Ridiculous IMO.

There's a recent study that shows kids with "black" names perform worse in school, not because they aren't as smart, but rather because their teachers expect less from them. Including them on a hurricane list would only legitimize a name like Shaniqua. I almost feel sorry for someone with a name like that. How many Shaniquas are going to pass the bar exam this year?
Of course, a lot of so-called "white" names are no better. Some of them just scream "future stuff star/stripper."

I think the whole name thing is stupid anyway. Half the time people can't even pronounce them. It is ridiculous to hear some reporters try to say the names. I do believe the naming convention is a bit unfair in that the names do all seem to be of european descent. A few spanish names, but very few carribean names -meaning black or even of dutch heritage. Since the storms are most likely to impact the carribean somewhere first, it is suprising there are not more ethnic names in the mix.
I think the naming convention should be a whole lot easier/plainer. Use year and letter; A2005, B2005, C2005, etc.
And in regards to the comment about kids with black names do worse in school because teacher's expect less of them, that is complete B.S. If a teacher thinks like that, they should not be teaching. -and that kind of ideology will be quickly weeded out. All kids deserve to be given equal expectations without regard to race, disability, religion, gender, weight, sexual preference or whatever!
A child's name has nothing to do with potential. Unfortuanately, in the U.S. the school systems are not nearly as uniformly equal as they should be, making socio-economics the biggest factor in the disparity amongst students. Private schools do so well because they have the supplies and also pay the most to attract the best teachers. Inner city schools and rural schools have less money and tax base to have modern textbooks and supplies and have a hard time getting teachers willing to deal with larger class size, willing to live in the neighborhoods they teach in or are willing to commute longer distances. -if they commute, they probably can't afford to live on a teacher's salary in the suburbs of a big city. If they are really good, they probably teach at the private school in the suburb! -or the public one where conditions are better than in the city anyway!
fyi - I'm of european descent and went to school to teach, but found I couldn't live off of what teachers make!!!! That's probably why you find so few unmarried teachers unless they have teaching roomates so combined they can survive life's bills!
