Gasoline situation

#1 Postby alicia-w » Tue Jul 19, 2005 10:17 am

Seems that Niceville and Valparaiso are OUT of gas. We found gas at the Pirate Stations in Bluewater and in Destin (oops, I meant the Shell Station), last night. Regular gas only and 2.37 a gallon.

while driving around on old hwy 98, we found a Circle K station that had regular for 2.19. Where's that price gouging thread again?

A local radio station (PC) said that Bay County is also experiencing a gs shortage.

There's little to no gas on base here either. Not that I could buy it if they had any.

Hey Alicia,
I know its a long way to drive but the Shell and BP stations in Destin close to the Destin Bridge have gasoline. Or lets put it this way they did when I passed by this morning. Lets hope they have some when I get off work or I might have to hitchhike back to FWB!!

Hey Lindaloo...this might shed some light on our current situation in the FWB/Niceville/Destin area...

Gas stations still running on empty

¸ Additional fuel supply on the way in the coming days.

By JEFF AYRES Daily News Staff Writer

More than a week after Hurricane Dennis blew through Northwest Florida, it almost seems like much of the area’s fuel supply washed away with the tide.
Extreme demand for gas, from motorists and outside fuel suppliers alike, drained the fuel supply last week at the Citgo Petroleum terminal in Niceville, which supplies at least 90 percent of local gas stations with fuel.
The terminal on Monday was still waiting for fuel shipments from terminals in Louisiana.
A barge should arrive from Lake Charles at 6 p.m. today and two more will bring fuel from Baton Rouge, said Jay Goss, the Citgo terminal’s manager.
Bill Mullen and other local gas station managers are eagerly awaiting the new stock.
Mullen’s Shell station at the corner of Palm Boulevard and State Road 285 in Niceville last received 3,500 gallons of unleaded gas on Sunday.
“It was gone in two-and-ahalf hours,” he said. “It’s about as crazy as I’ve seen it in 15 or 16 years in this business.”
Niceville seems to be one of the hardest-hit areas. Gas was as scarce there Monday as water in a desert.
Barbara Kelly, a manager at the Citgo station at the corner of State Road 85 and College Boulevard, said people were calling wanting to know if the station had gas. If the station had none the callers asked where fuel can be found, she said.
“We’ve had at least 100 calls today. ‘When are you going to have fuel?’ As soon as we can get it.’ ”
Niceville resident Teresa Richardson said she had a halftank of gas in her vehicle, enough to get her through the week. But the shortage has shown her the importance of conserving fuel.
“My husband spent two days looking for gas,” she said. “It has made me think about becoming more conservative, because what if this becomes a regular problem?”
The lack of gas wasn’t confined to Niceville. Scattered stations in Fort Walton Beach and surrounding areas remained without fuel Monday.
The Food Max store on Eglin Parkway in Shalimar hasn’t had fuel since Dennis moved through.
The store’s manager, Sam Shahid, could say only “hopefully, sometime this week,” when asked when the store would have gas again.
Sales of food, beer and cigarettes haven’t been enough to offset the lost fuel revenue, he said.
“Sales went down big-time. It always does” after a hurricane, Shahid said.
Goss said the lengthy gas shortage was caused by two things — refineries in other areas that had to tap Citgo’s supply when they ran dry and an intense demand from motorists in the days before Dennis struck.
“There were too many people trying to fill up in a two- to three-day period,” he said.
Fuel is commonly brought to Florida from other states by water, which takes several days.
The Citgo terminal was out of gas for two weeks after Hurricane Ivan last year. To avoid lengthy outages in the future, Goss said a couple of extra barges will begin bringing fuel to the terminal.
Once the three barges heading to Niceville drop off their fuel, they’ll return to Baton Rouge and Lake Charles for more.
Goss said it will take about two weeks for the terminal to again have a normal “safety stock” of gas, meaning enough supply for normal business and reserves for unforeseen emergencies.
Meanwhile, Murphy Oil, a Freeport-based supplier, reported Monday that fuel was back at its Murphy USA gas stations, including those at Wal-Mart stores. The company had been without gas for about a week after Dennis.
It was unclear when the company would have new fuel supplies for other stations it serves.

yep, i saw the Shell station in Destin (i think i referenced it...) but to cross the bridge and pay $3 toll just to get gas seems a bit goofy. they need to fix the distribution problem before we have another storm or we will have a very serious situation on our hands.

My sister said for several days after Dennis there was no gas to be found in Pensacola area. And if you found a station the lines there were very long.

$2.50 a gallon is common here...

Low price is about $2.39 gallon for brand X stations, etc.
