Will Emily be retired?

#1 Postby Hurricanehink » Wed Jul 20, 2005 8:44 am

Emily hit Mexico twice as a major hurricane, and has history behind it. Should it be retired?

I don't think so - while she was a major for several days, there was minimal loss of life and damage. Those two areas play a big role in name retirement.

What is the criteria for retiring a name?

it will likely be retired

but not for the reasons you may think. It likely will be for devastating Grenada. Damage photos showed that this did almost as much damage as did Ivan there

She wacked Mexico twice, both times as majors (there will be massive damage when all is said and done from both strikes)... caused deaths even in Jamaica and sure there will be some in Mexico :( so yes expect she'll be retired.

Good-bye Emily, hello Elaine.

After '87 and '93, third time's gotta be the charm (I'm discounting '81 and '99 here).

I dont think she will. While she was strong enough I dont think she caused enough widespread damage and deaths that a storm needs to be retired. I havent heard any of the latest reports from Mexico, unless they are really bad I dont think Emily should be retired.

Last year I didnt think Francis should have been retired.......

Frances was the 5th costliest storm in US history (with inflation factored in!). You don't think the 5th costliest storm in history should've been retired...?

I went through Francis. My house is a short drive from where the strongest winds were clocked durring landfall and it was not that bad. IMO the reasons why there were so much reported damage from Frances was the huge windfield and slow motion at landfall, i think Jax all the way to Boca felt tropical storm winds , Floridians were underprepared and many destroyed property was old and/or poorly constructed, and there were many fraudulant claims, FEMA handed out millions to Miami/Dade county where they didnt even get tropical storm winds.

Frances was not a major hurricane when it hit Florida, the death toll was suprisingly low and the damage reports were exagerated. That is why I think it should have not been retired.

ya but also it made land fall in not very populated areas (I think) so there (once again i think) minimal damage compared to what it could have done if it had hit a very populated area

Mexico has retired hurricanes that were alot less than Emily... look at Roxanne in 1995. It hit the Yucatan at 115mph and got retired.
