DALLAS, Texas (WFAA ABC 8/WFAA.com) - A small cell of severe thunderstorms quickly developed a powerful punch Friday afternoon, dumping heavy rain and scattered hail in several areas of North Texas.
The storms moved in from the east across Terrell and Mesquite, knocking down power lines across LBJ Freeway at Military Parkway. Police closed the freeway to traffic in both directions while utility crews worked to remove the lines, leading to a massive backup along LBJ. Although the lanes reopened to traffic around 5:10 p.m., drivers were urged to avoid the area until the backup had time to dissipate.
There were several reports of small hail in downtown Dallas for a brief period around 4:30 p.m.
