Okay enough already! I am sick of the heat. Last year I bought one of those big pools set it up and it was cool all summer. In October I decided well that was cheap enough I will just toss it out rather than try to store it and deal with spiders and holes etc. Now I didn't buy one this year and it is baking. I started housesitting yesterday and thought cool they have a big house great AC and a big pool.....today I went out and burned my feet on the pool decking which the edge around the pool is stained dark brown???! then I reached out for the ladder and burned my hand. Only good thing was when I went to take a shower the pilot light is out on the water heater and the shower was nice and cold.

We here in Lawrence have been a heat advisory for the past 2 days and will be in one untill Sunday night. Today, we hit 103 with a heat index of 111. I'm really not sure why St. Louis is in exessive heat while KC and Topeka offices have just issued a heat advisory when we will have the same temps. and even longer. I can see why Lawrence is not as it is not a big metropol. area, but I figured if St. Louis was KC would be as well-I guess because we have stretches of 100 degree days pretty often here-at least once a summer many times 3-4 times a summer. Oh well-it is hot for sure, but this will not last past Monday-in 2003, we had to 10 day stretches of 100 degree days. Summer in Kansas-what can you say!!!

sure is! we are for-casted for 101 degrees Sunday now... with heat index up to 115. This definitely meets criteria for the city to implement it's heat plan, which by the way the city of Chicago has it set up special with the NWS that they declare excessive heat warnings..not NWS as happens in the rest of the country. Wonder if we are going to break and all time record? Blah.. gonna have sticky tar streets and cruddy feeling skin from pollution from this. Can see the haze coming off the streets during this type of heat too. Saving grace is it won't be hitting over 100 multiple days in a row like in 1995. But upper 90's Sat and Monday with lows only going in mid 70's at night is still going to cause problems for our high population in the poverty level. :(

It was already in the mid to upper 90s here by noon today. It's just too hot to do anything.

The criteria for heat advisories are geared to averages and how much above your average highs you get. For places in the deserts, temperatures and even HI values below 110F don't get that much notice. In fact, 90's are considred to be just warm even when the dewpoints are up around 75-80 in Yuma.

I think alot of it has to do with adapting too. For example I was born and raised in chicago. While living in NC I adjust to the hotter temps and they didn't bother me, but the first winter back in Chicago was SHOCKINGLY cold. Also while AC is pretty much 'required' in hotter climates for comfort ...many in Chicago and other upper midwest area's don't have it.

The cost of heating during the cold months has become insane (way insane compared to even 10 years ago) and people simply can't afford to cool in summer to. Most are using 12 month payment plans to spread out the cost of heating so they are paying a couple hundred a month even in july and august for past heating bills. Usually it's doable untill something like this happens. Their bodies are 'shocked' by heat they are not use to coping with. And lifestyle is so different people don't know how to slow down (people down south really do things slower midday then here.. they don't think about it as it's habit) or don't recognise the warning signs or simply are not able to get to a cool place due to mobility issues. That's why 1995 was so deadly in Chicago. Just keeping my fingers crossed the people USE the cooling shelters now available.

Hell has paid the Mid-west a visit and looks to by staying around for awhile. Very hot summers sometimes lead to very cold winters. The NWS here in Ft Worth TX said if the high was 300 miles futher south we would be talking about a 1980 repeat.

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHICAGO IL
1157 AM CDT SUN JUL 24 2005

...DANGEROUS HEAT AND HUMIDITY THIS AFTERNOON...

.HOT HUMID AIR OVER THE CENTRAL PORTION OF THE COUNTRY WILL HELP
SEND AFTERNOON HIGHS INTO THE LOWER 100S. COMBINED WITH HIGH
HUMIDITY THIS WILL FORCE HEAT INDEX VALUES TO THE 110 TO 155
RANGE.

155 is such an obvious typo but made me think.. what's the highest temp/heat index ever?

Just a quick report: our high yest. was 106 with heat index of 115. Currently we are at 100 and 109. It is def. hot, but the good thing, this is not a prolonged event like we can can many times see here. Thanks goodness the high is moving and does not stagnate like it so often does here. Pretty much typical summer weather here in Kansas!!!

Aslkahuna: Thanks for the info on the criteria. The more I thought about it after I posted, the more I realized that we will only be about 10 degrees above normal and that we get stretches of 100 degrees here quite often-thus the advisory and not the warning-I also thought: In winter we can have highs 30 degrees below normal (around 0-10 degrees)-imagine if we had highs in the summer 30 degrees above normal for 3-5 days???? Wow-125 degrees here with 80% humidity-yuuuuukkkk!! I guess there is nothing to say it can't happen-if it can go that low in winter-it could go that high in the summer!!! Made me relaize my 2 days of 100 were not so bad!!!
