To be blunt, that is one of the most un-informed comments ever posted on this forum. Not only is calling the terrible storm Ivan the great assinine (maybe you have the $$ to pay for the great storm and compensate the victims), but to say that a storm of the same intensity, if not slightly more intense than the one that hit Alabama last year was nothing like Ivan shows that you really don't have a clue regarding the intensities of either storm (if you were comparing Emily to Ivan at Cayman, thats a different story, but Ivan vs Emily in the GOM equals a push at the very least)
Sorry. when i think of hurricanes i don't imidiatly think of the people that suffered. I usually think only of the awsome power of the storm. i know that sounds like the same thing but what i'm getting at is i don't put myself in there position that they were in at the time. I didn't mean to offend any one when i posted that. i'm sorry that i did i tryed to delete it before i posted this but for some reason i couldn't one again i'm sorry if i offended any one

Another Mexican hurricane with little fanfare seems to be Hurricane Anita in 1977. Anita hit a very sparesly populated area of Mexico. Basically, an area of forests. Many reports say not much damage to structures and very few casualties.
Anita landfalled as a borderline Category 4/5.
However, at the point of landfall, some say there was not a single tree left standing in the forests where Anita had hit.
Also, 10 people did lose their lives in Hurricane Anita.

Derek, I thought I read somewhere that Hurricane Anita played a very important role in the study of hurricanes moving over warm eddies in the Gulf. Is this true?

Which reports? You mean the first landfall at Cozumel? I think people are creating a strawman here.
The point about Cozumel is that it wasn't "leveled" as a few people rather unwisely assumed before they actually saw damage reports from the area; people in the area made a point of noting it wasn't leveled. Most of the hotels there have long since reopened.

I know this might be belaboring A point...but I think it is NOT the point of this post at all. Being *leveled* and having hotels open (long since? it just happened a week ago! - and if you look at photos etc. there is no way *most* of the ones damaged have reopened without ongoing rebuilding unless Mexico is suddenly on a Germanic type of schedule - open and repaired are again, two different things) AND being aware that Cozumel was not the most heavily impacted area AND the impact on homes and businesses beyond hotels was devastating, far beyond the initial reports (and continuing to come to light as we type and read - in case you've given up following that news). That would be the point, but Derek is welcome to correct me if I'm off base.

No need to apologize. Derek tends to respond to things very harshly and blatantly. While correct on some analyses his responses tend to rub the people the wrong way.
