If the final totals result in nearly the same amount of tornadoes per tornado reports (which the final total will likely go down some due to some reports being of the same continuous tornado being reported from numerous locations), May 2003 has already broken the record for most tornadoes in ANY one month with June 1992 holding the old record of 399. May 1995 was second with 391.
Here are the first 10 days of reports per SPC for tornadoes, wind, and hail as of 11 am, May 11, 2003.
---Tornadoes---Wind---Hail---Total
1:------12--------135---196-----343
2:-------5--------194---264-----463
3:------18---------29---184-----237
4:------94--------115---309-----518
5:------23---------98---194-----315

May is only a little over a third over too! This has definitely been a record-breaking month for severe weather.
