I will say no. Maybe a major somewhere, but not a Cat 5 IMO.

Out of approximately 1500 tropical storms since 1851, only three 3 of them have become category 5 and struck the US as a category 5.

...so I'm gonna say "no".

considering that we've already had two cat 4s and that ocean temperatures will just continue to rise for the next month and that the wet MJO will control the Atlantic by later in August I first of all wouldnt be suprised to see 2 or even 3 cat 5's form... I'm not positive if one will hit the US but like someone else said in this thread, gut feeling tells me yes

I voted yes. Not that I want a cat 5 to come near land, but this has already been a weird season.

Easy no. It'll be close (weaken before landfall or veer off), but it won't hit the US

I had to vote yes. I hope I am wrong because I would hate to see someone had to go through that but this season has been so strange already that nothing would surprise me. Please say there will not be a Cat 5 to hit the US.

I would say yes, due to the freaky activity already this season, but hopefully I am wrong.

In the simple, yes. Where, likely Florida under the gun. Depends on Bermuda High Strength.

I voted "No". It's very unlikely for a hurricane to approach the landmass of US as a 5 and not weaken before the eye comes ashore. The statistics mtm4319 quoted illustrate that point very well.

If you are asking if a storm which reaches Cat 5 status at some point and then strikes the US (but not still a 5 at the time), I'd be inclined to vote "Yes".

It would be cool to say that I was alive when a Cat 5 hurricane hit the US because it dosn't happen AT ALL. I think only 2 have. but i'm going to say no it isn't likely at all.

ok I've been wondering about this for a while. Has any one here ever heard of Super Typhoon Tip of the 1979 pacific hurricane season? and if so do you have any information on it?

It holds the record for the lowest pressure ever in a TC and the largest TC ever recorded.

edit: sat images of Tip (too big to post here)

I'd hate to go through that. I heard that it was half the sive of the US. and the pressure droped to 879 millibars. TIP was truly amazing.

My question is why was it so big?

Well floyd covered the whole east coast but it wasn't as wide and it's windfield was much smaller

by atlantic standards though floyd was mammoth with a huge windfield
