"Keep in mind that we lost of 3 million cubic yards from Ivan, so there wasn't a whole lot more to lose," said Escambia County Administrator George Touart.

I 100 percent agree. Barrier islands are not stable enough to build on. They fall into the sea then come back then back again. People need not build on them. Also houses on the coast line should be made out of brick or cement/Steal. In the code needs to be rised to hold up to 180 mph winds at least.

The stupidity of building on those barrier islands shocks me. Year after year they got washed over by hurricanes yet people still rebuild  .

I agree, and they even build as close to the shore as the codes will let them. It just doesn't make any sense. I guess local governments like the fact that the properties are so expensive which means the taxes are very high as well.

I get a kick out of the fact that people who do live on the coast whine about high homeowner's insurance costs. Geee, I wonder why....

That is why I live inland and I can drive down towared Gulf Shores. :)

I am not shocked at the damage in the pictures. I remember seeing Orange Beach after Ivan.
