Gulf of Mexico Tropical Summary - GUTS IN on August 4, 2005

While dry air and Saharan dust dominate large portions of the Atlantic,
moisture is abundant in the Gulf of Mexico. A very weak low persists
just off the Mississippi/Alabama coast, with a trof extending Southeast
toward Florida.

Some dry air is trying to ease southward through central Mississippi and Northern Louisiana.

I do not expect tropical development in the Gulf of Mexico in the next 48 hours.

I hadn't seen that dry air - it just makes the MM5 look even more stupid for developing that low into a hurricane.

That dry air is wrapping around an Upper-level Low that is forming across Ms/Al. Models have been persistent in forming a Surface Low and retrograding it Westward but the GFS is stacking it with the ULL.

The low has been pretty persistent there for a while now.

It just dropped an enormous amount of rain on us, too. Whew.
