Has a Hurricane/TS/TD ever hit South America?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

#1 Postby Astro_man92 » Mon Aug 08, 2005 3:40 pm

I haven't really been wondering this untill recently but. Has a Hurricane/TS/TD ever hit any part of South America? If you know of one that has could you please post a link to the Systems track or info on it.

Thanks

here's the link (from SSD): http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/catarina.html

It was estimated at 75kts for 30hrs before landfall. It's not very accurate due to the lack of appropriate sats in the southern hemisphere, but it matches up with on-shore reports. Dvorak even got to 4.5/4.5. And in March, too. Great animations at the bottom.

Bret in 1993 mad elandfall in Venezuela and killed more than a hundred in Caracas. Joan and Cesar also devastated Venezuela. It's not as uncommon for a storm to have a significant impact on South America as one may think

Yes. In 1996, Hurricane Cesar crossed over Nicaragua and became Hurricane Douglas in EPAC, strengthening to a Cat 4 in the EPAC.

I found it. 1988 Joan hit Central America at 120kts and weakened to 45kts. She then turned into Miriam in the EPAC, who restrengthened to 60 kts, brushing the S coast of Mexico and weakening again to a TD which she was for 6 days. Image shortly.

edit: But it looks like I got beat to it.
